Embedded C Developer – Contract | Belfast | £400–£450 per day
Initial six-month contract with a view to extension. Two days per week in the office initially, moving to fully remote. Start within one month.
Overview
Ocho is partnering with an engineering business to recruit an Embedded C Developer to work on monitoring and diagnostic products used within the energy sector.
You’ll develop firmware that connects software with physical hardware, supporting sensor integration, data acquisition, and device communications. This is a hands-on role working alongside electronics and test engineers to develop new features and improve the reliability of existing products.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and debug embedded firmware in C.
- Integrate sensors, peripherals, and communication interfaces.
- Investigate firmware and hardware issues, identifying causes, and implementing fixes.
- Support new hardware components and product features.
- Write and maintain unit and integration tests.
- Work with electronics and QA engineers to validate software on physical devices.
- Contribute to code reviews and technical documentation.

Person We Are Looking For
- Strong commercial experience developing embedded software in C.
- Experience working with microcontrollers or embedded processors.
- Understanding of memory management, interrupts, and hardware interfaces.
- Practical experience debugging firmware on target hardware.
- Familiarity with interfaces such as UART, SPI, or I²C.
- Experience using version control and structured software testing.
- Comfortable taking ownership of work and collaborating with hardware engineers.

Nice to Have
- Experience with an RTOS or embedded Linux.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus.
- C++ or Python experience.
- Background in sensing, instrumentation, industrial automation, or energy technology.
- Experience with automated firmware testing and build pipelines.

- Day rate: £400–£450
- Working pattern: Two days per week in the office initially, moving to fully remote
