Location
Infleqtion has offices in the USA, United Kingdom, and Australia. This is a permanent, full-time position at our Kidlington, Oxford office. Our flexible working policy enables all full-time employees to work from home up to 2 days a week, if work permits.
Position Summary
As part of our strategy for growth in the UK, we are expanding our Engineering Team and recruiting an Instrumentation Software Engineer. In this role, you will develop software and firmware interfaces to control and monitor optical and atomic physics systems for the development of next-generation atomic clocks and PNT systems. These systems offer orders of magnitude improvements in sensing and accuracy compared to current technologies.
Job Responsibilities
Technical
- Develop embedded software and firmware for microcontroller-based systems using Rust and C or other appropriate languages.
- Develop low-level device drivers and interfaces for sensors, actuators, communication devices, and peripheral hardware.
- Integrate microcontrollers, electronics, and higher-level software into cohesive systems.
- Implement real-time control, monitoring, data acquisition, and communication functions.
- Perform board bring-up and debug hardware-firmware integration issues using benchtop test equipment.
- Develop test software and automated tools in Python or similar high-level languages.
- Test and validate firmware, electronics, and complete systems against defined requirements.
- Diagnose and resolve functional, timing, reliability, and performance issues.
- Work with colleagues to define verification and validation plans and tests.
- Follow embedded software best practices to produce reliable, maintainable, and reusable code.
- Produce clear design documentation, interface definitions, inline comments, and user documentation.
- Support products throughout the development lifecycle, from initial prototypes through deployment and ongoing maintenance.
Personal and Team Responsibilities
- Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure technical objectives and deadlines are met.
- Work within multidisciplinary teams of software engineers, electronics engineers, physicists, and technicians.
- Communicate technical risks, findings, and design decisions clearly.
- Adapt to changing requirements and manage technical ambiguity effectively.
- Take ownership of assigned work from requirements definition through implementation, testing, and delivery.

Requirements
Core Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in electronics, engineering, computer science, or a related discipline.
- Several years of relevant experience developing embedded software or firmware for microcontrollers.
- Proficiency in Rust, embedded C, or C++.
- Experience developing low-level drivers and software for controlling hardware.
- Experience with microcontroller peripherals and communication interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, or ADC/DAC.
- Understanding of embedded-system concepts, including interrupts, memory constraints, timing requirements, and concurrency.
- Experience integrating and debugging software and electronic hardware.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including systematic investigation of hardware and firmware issues.
- Experience using hardware-debugging tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and in-circuit debuggers.
- Proficiency with version-control workflows using Git.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to work within collaborative, cross-functional, and multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience with ARM microcontroller architectures.
- Experience developing applications using a real-time operating system such as FreeRTOS, Embassy, etc.
- Experience implementing real-time feedback and control loops.
- Experience with bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms, and production programming.
- Experience with low-power, safety-critical, or high-reliability embedded-system design.
- Experience developing automated hardware-in-the-loop and system-level tests.
- Proficiency in Python for test automation, data analysis, and development tooling.
- Experience with the full embedded-software development lifecycle, including requirements, architecture, implementation, code review, unit testing, integration testing, verification, and release.
- Experience using automated documentation, static analysis, unit-testing, and CI/CD tools.
- Experience with schematic review, PCB bring-up, and diagnosing electronics faults.
- Experience transitioning embedded products from prototype development into manufacture and deployment.

Travel
Up to 10% travel, including international travel, may be required.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work will normally be performed in an office and laboratory environment. Able to efficiently use automated office equipment such as laptops, copiers, and printers; able to effectively engage in communications (via phone, computer, or in-person). Will involve sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 10 kg.
