Senior Software Engineer – Embedded Linux / C++
Location: Uxbridge, West London
Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Experience: 10+ years
We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to take technical ownership of complex embedded software platforms used within satellite communications, maritime safety, and mission-critical systems.
This is a senior, hands-on engineering position combining software architecture, embedded Linux development, and technical leadership. You’ll own major software work packages from initial requirements and architecture through development, testing, release, and production, working closely with international engineering teams.
The core environment centers around modern C++, Embedded Linux, Yocto, and ARM-based systems, with exposure to firmware, networking, communications, and safety-critical product development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take end-to-end technical ownership of major embedded software work packages.
- Define software architecture and translate system requirements into robust technical designs.
- Design and develop production-grade C++ applications on Embedded Linux/Yocto.
- Work across the boundary between Linux application software, microcontroller firmware, and embedded hardware.
- Develop and optimize networking, QoS, and communications functionality for bandwidth-constrained and high-latency environments.
- Integrate software with satellite network services, messaging platforms, REST APIs, and client applications.
- Establish and improve CI/CD, code review, and automated testing practices using tools including GitLab, Jenkins, and Gerrit.
- Define testing strategies covering unit, integration, and Hardware-in-the-Loop testing.
- Build security into software architecture, including secure boot, signed updates, access control, and vulnerability management.
- Lead architecture/design reviews and provide technical mentorship to other engineers.

Required Experience:
- 10+ years' experience in embedded software engineering.
- Strong commercial experience with modern C++ and Embedded Linux.
- Deep hands-on knowledge of Yocto / OpenEmbedded.
- Experience taking complex, multi-processor embedded products from requirements through to released software.
- Strong software architecture and system-level design experience.
- Experience operating as a technical authority or technical lead, while remaining hands-on with code.
- Knowledge of low-level C, firmware, and embedded systems.
- Strong technical documentation skills, particularly within regulated, audited, or safety-critical environments.

Highly Desirable:
- Experience in any of the following would be particularly valuable: satellite communications, RF or maritime systems; FreeRTOS or bare-metal firmware; ARM Cortex; CAN, SPI, I2C, or UART; TCP/IP, UDP, SIP/RTP, PJSIP, or Asterisk; GitLab, Gerrit, Jenkins, and Jira; safety-critical or regulated product development; and AI-assisted software engineering tools.
