Embedded Firmware / Software Engineer

Location: Banchory, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Working pattern: On-site, with some flexibility for hybrid working (minimum 1–2 days per week in the office)

Overview

Wenham Carter is supporting a search for an Embedded Firmware / Software Engineer to join its growing R&D team in Banchory. This role will focus on embedded software development for highly specialised surveying and inspection products, working on systems that combine camera imaging, laser scanning, sensing, and in-house electronics. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving practical product-development challenges and wants to contribute directly to the development of advanced, niche technology.

  • Develop and support embedded firmware/software for electronic products in an R&D environment
  • Work with embedded Linux build environments, particularly Yocto / OpenEmbedded
  • Support product development across imaging, sensing, and embedded processor-based platforms
  • Collaborate with electronics, firmware, and software colleagues across the UK, Portugal, and the US
  • Contribute to the development of new product variants and next-generation systems
  • Help bring robust commercial products through development into production-ready form

We are looking for someone who brings:

  • Experience in embedded firmware and/or embedded software engineering
  • Strong exposure to Yocto / OpenEmbedded or similar embedded Linux build systems
  • Commercial product development experience in industry
  • Experience working with embedded electronic devices or systems
  • A practical, hands-on mindset and willingness to work closely with a small engineering team
  • The ability to operate as an individual contributor rather than in a management-track role
