Role: Embedded Software Engineer Location: Manchester – Mainly office based, with early finish on a Friday Salary: £50,000–£60,000 + Benefits

SEM's client, a growing technology business based in Manchester, is looking to add an Embedded Software Engineer to their engineering team. This is a great opportunity to work on innovative embedded products within a close-knit, technically driven environment.

The Role

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you'll work across the full development cycle, from firmware design through to testing, integration, and production support. You'll collaborate closely with hardware, electronics, and test engineers to deliver robust, reliable embedded solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded firmware in C/C++
  • Work closely with electronics engineers on hardware-software integration
  • Debug and test firmware using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and JTAG/SWD tools
  • Support the transition from prototype to full production
  • Contribute to design reviews, code reviews, and technical documentation
  • Ensure firmware meets performance, reliability, and compliance standards

Skills & Experience Required

  • Degree in Electronics, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Strong experience with embedded C/C++ programming
  • Experience with microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, or similar ARM-based platforms)
  • Familiarity with RTOS environments (FreeRTOS desirable)
  • Experience with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, or CAN
  • Understanding of low-level debugging and hardware-software integration
  • Knowledge of version control (Git) and structured development practices
