Embedded Software Engineer – Cambridge, Cambridgeshire (Hybrid)

Salary: Up to £80,000 per annum
Visa Sponsorship available

A new Embedded Software Engineer job in Cambridge is available with a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced RF and microwave solutions for the telecommunications, space, defence, and aerospace sectors.

Due to continued growth, our client is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to develop software and firmware for next-generation communication and control systems. Working alongside electronics, RF, FPGA, and systems engineers, you will contribute to the development, integration, and testing of high-performance products from concept through to production. This Embedded Software Engineer job in Cambridge offers the opportunity to work across low-level firmware, real-time applications, and embedded platforms, helping integrate software with electronic hardware to deliver reliable systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test embedded software and firmware using C/C++.
  • Develop software for microcontroller and processor-based platforms.
  • Support hardware integration, board bring-up, and debugging.
  • Develop and maintain communication interfaces such as Ethernet, SPI, I2C, and UART.
  • Work closely with hardware, FPGA, and systems engineers to define requirements and resolve integration issues.
  • Investigate software and system-level faults using appropriate debugging and test tools.
  • Participate in code reviews, produce technical documentation, and support product development through to manufacture.

Skills and Experience

  • A degree in Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong embedded C/C++ programming skills.
  • Experience developing software for embedded processors or microcontrollers, ideally ARM-based platforms.
  • Experience working in bare-metal, RTOS, or embedded Linux environments.
  • A good understanding of hardware interfaces and software integration with electronic systems.
  • Experience debugging and testing embedded software.
  • Exposure to networking, Yocto, Zephyr, or secure embedded development would be beneficial.
