Embedded Software Engineer (Senior/Principal)

Permanent | Salary DOE
Location: Farnborough | 5 days per week onsite

We’re partnering with a leading organisation within the UK defence and cyber sector to appoint an experienced Embedded Software Engineer at Senior or Principal level.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a highly skilled, multidisciplinary engineering team developing innovative technologies for complex and critical environments.

You’ll contribute across the full development lifecycle, from early-stage research, ideation and prototyping through to experimentation, de-risking and full product development, applying your technical expertise to solve challenging real-world problems.

The Opportunity

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you’ll work as part of a small multidisciplinary team developing advanced solutions across software, FPGA and associated technologies. You’ll combine strong embedded software engineering expertise with creativity and technical curiosity, researching emerging technologies and identifying how they can be applied to develop innovative solutions.

The role would suit an experienced engineer who enjoys working across complex technical challenges and wants exposure to a broad range of technologies within a highly specialised environment.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll play a key role in researching, designing and developing innovative engineering solutions by:

  • Designing, developing and testing embedded software for complex systems.
  • Contributing across the full engineering lifecycle, from initial research and ideation through to product development.
  • Developing solutions using technologies including C/C++, Rust and Python.
  • Working with embedded Linux and bare-metal MCU environments.
  • Supporting the development and integration of FPGA-based solutions.
  • Contributing to technical experimentation, prototyping and de-risking activities.
  • Working collaboratively across software, electronics, hardware and RF engineering disciplines.
  • Exploring opportunities to apply AI, machine learning and emerging technologies.
  • Helping define and develop solutions to complex customer requirements.
  • Ensuring engineering activities comply with appropriate information security and regulatory requirements.
  • Providing technical expertise and leadership appropriate to Senior or Principal level.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
