Cygnus Instruments manufactures state of the art, ruggedised, ultrasonic measuring equipment used in global industrial and subsea applications, primarily in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Located at our design Office in Bath, Somerset, this role requires an individual with a keen interest and knowledge in embedded software engineering and has a willingness to develop and learn. As a small company we require a versatile engineer who can work on bringing up new boards right up to delivering the final application.

- Support and collaborate with the engineering team on product development projects.
- Develop with STM32 and similar microcontrollers and their peripherals.
- Develop code in C/C++.
- Learn about Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technology and methods.
- Learn about ultrasonic probes using in NDT.
- Follow the Agile design methodology.
- Recording research and design activity in a digital logbook.
- Update company project planning software as work is progressed.
- Following the companies ISO 9001 procedures.
- Using Microsoft Office 365 for documents and communication.
- Occasional travel to Dorchester head office when required.
- The possibility of future customer site visits to evaluate designs and get feedback.
What experience you’ll need
Essentials
- Fluent in C++ 20.
- Familiar with STM32 microcontrollers.
- Must be conversant with Cube tools, Eclipse and GCC.
Must have recent experience in:
- Developing embedded systems or products.
- Using an RTOS (Azure: ThreadX, FileX, USBX).
- Developing embedded USB protocols.
- Developing communication stacks and protocols.
- Driver development skills,
- SPI / I2C / UART.
- Displays – RGB, DSI.
- Flash memory interface.
- FPGA interface and initialisation.

Nice to have/ or good understanding of
- Signal processing of sampled analogue signals – filtering, FFT, statistics.
- Bluetooth LE and stack development.
- Physics, measurement and instrumentation principles.
- Have experience using test equipment such as logic analysers, oscilloscopes and power meters.
- Hold a good degree in engineering.
- Ability to handle more than one project at a time.
