We’re looking for an Embedded Systems Engineer to help us develop the next generation of our connected hardware products. This is a hands-on role combining embedded software, electronics, and the integration of physical components such as sensors, motors, and actuators.
We currently operate Raspberry Pi-based hardware running customer-facing applications. As our products become more sophisticated, we need someone who can take ownership of the systems that connect our software to the physical machine.
You’ll write embedded and device-level software, help select and integrate electronic components, and work closely with our software developers and product designer. You won’t be expected to design every mechanical or electronic component yourself, but you should be confident evaluating designs, making recommendations, and solving problems across the complete system.
You must be able to commit to working from our office in Newport, South Wales, every Tuesday and Wednesday. This is non-negotiable. Additional office attendance may occasionally be required when assembling, testing, or troubleshooting physical prototypes.
What you’ll do:
- Develop and maintain embedded software and firmware using C/C++ and Python.
- Build software for Raspberry Pi, embedded Linux systems, and microcontrollers.
- Integrate motors, sensors, actuators, relays, motor controllers, RFID, and other electronic components.
- Help select suitable off-the-shelf hardware and advise the team on electronic design decisions.
- Work closely with our product designer to ensure the mechanical, electrical, and software elements of our products operate together effectively.
- Collaborate with our software developers to integrate devices with our existing applications, APIs, and backend services.
- Develop reliable communication between embedded devices, local applications, and cloud-based systems.
- Prototype, assemble, test, and troubleshoot electronic and embedded systems.
- Use diagnostic equipment and software tools to identify faults across hardware and software.
- Design systems that can detect and recover from problems such as jams, sensor failures, power interruptions, and loss of connectivity.
- Implement device logging, diagnostics, monitoring, and fault reporting.
- Contribute to decisions around device provisioning, configuration, security, and remote software updates.
- Create test tools, test procedures, and supporting technical documentation.
- Take ownership of embedded components and contribute to the wider architecture of our hardware products.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we’re looking for:
- Strong programming skills in C or C++.
- Experience with hardware control, testing, or automation.
- Experience developing software for embedded Linux devices, such as Raspberry Pi or similar platforms.
- Experience working with microcontrollers and writing low-level firmware.
- A practical understanding of electronics and the ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and component datasheets.
- Experience integrating hardware such as sensors, motors, actuators, relays, motor controllers, and RFID.
- Familiarity with hardware communication interfaces and protocols such as GPIO, I2C, SPI, UART, or similar.
- Confidence using diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, or logic analysers.
- An understanding of reliable system design, including fault detection, safe operating states, and recovery from unexpected failures.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose issues spanning software, electronics, and physical hardware.
- The ability to take ownership of your work and make informed technical recommendations.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with colleagues from software, mechanical design, and non-technical backgrounds.
Advantageous skills, but not necessary:
- Experience developing vending, dispensing, robotics, automation, manufacturing, or point-of-sale hardware.
- Experience selecting motors, sensors, drivers, power supplies, and other electronic components.
- Experience with microcontroller platforms such as STM32, ESP32, Arduino, or similar.
- Experience with additional industrial or device communication protocols, such as CAN bus, RS-232, RS-485, or Modbus.
- Experience with networking and communication technologies such as RFID, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular connectivity.
- Experience building remotely managed or Internet of Things devices.
- Experience with remote device provisioning, monitoring, and over-the-air software or firmware updates.
- Experience designing custom circuit boards or working with PCB design tools such as KiCad or Altium.
- An understanding of power management, electrical safety, and electromagnetic compatibility considerations.
- Experience designing test rigs, automated hardware tests, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
- Experience working with RESTful APIs and integrating devices with backend services.
