Emergency Room Companion Nights/weekend on-call

(part-time, non-exempt)

5:00pm – 5:00am

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Emergency Room (ER) Companion rotates nights and weekend on-call responsibilities to support sisters during ER or acute care visits. They accompany the sister to provide comfort and reassurance, maintain calm, and collaborate respectfully with the medical team while fully adhering to hospital protocols. The companion communicates accurate updates to the lead on-call Coordinator, defers all medical decision-making to the Mission Councilor and the sister’s DPOA, and, when possible, assists with transportation back to IHM Sisters Motherhouse.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Rotate on-call responsibilities with other Emergency Room Companions in the evenings and weekends (5:00pm – 5:00am) for visits to the emergency room and acute care.
  • Serve as a companion to sister during her time in the Emergency Room or acute care setting, offering comfort, reassurance, and a calming presence.
  • Maintain respectful cooperation with the clinical team and honor hospital protocols.
  • Communicate updates to the lead on-call Coordinator; ensure they relay accurate information.
  • Provide transportation, if possible, for the sister, back to the IHM Motherhouse from the acute care or ER.
  • Defer all clinical guidance to the Mission Councilor and DPOA.
  • Provide excellent customer service to our residents, their loved ones, our guests, and fellow staff members.

  • Health care background in nursing, such as a nurse aid, CNA, nurse, or experience in a long-term care setting preferred.
  • High school diploma.
  • Understands the importance of and maintains a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Exhibits patience and compassion with all IHM Sister residents; provides personal support while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication rooted in empathy and compassion.
  • Demonstrates calmness in high-stress environments.
  • Flexibility in working schedule.
