I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The difference is the quality and breadth. You’ll advise significant clients across sectors including retail, consumer, industrial and financial services, while having access to leading expertise in areas including industrial relations, national minimum wage and working time.
And because you’re part of the wider Employment team, your development does not stop at advisory work. There are opportunities to gain exposure to tribunals, litigation, corporate support and other specialist areas while maintaining advisory work as your core focus.
What you’ll be doing
- Advise managers, senior HR professionals and in-house legal teams across the full range of employment law and employee relations issues.
- Build trusted relationships with major clients, providing clear, commercially minded advice rather than simply quoting the law.
- Contribute to the continued growth of a specialist Employment Advisory Service handling national and international client work.
- Develop your expertise alongside recognised specialists, with opportunities for broader contentious and non-contentious exposure.
What you’ll bring
- Around 3-5 years’ PQE or equivalent substantive employment law advisory experience.
- Strong employment law knowledge and the ability to translate technical issues into practical commercial advice.
- The credibility and communication skills to advise stakeholders at different levels, from operational managers to senior HR and legal professionals.
- A genuine desire to develop a long-term career within high-quality employment advisory work.

Who this suits
You’re an employment law professional who genuinely enjoys advisory work and the client relationships that come with it.
Perhaps you’re already working within an employment advisory provider and want to take the quality of your clients, work, remuneration and career progression to another level.
Or you’re in private practice and have realised that advisory work is the part of employment law you enjoy most. You want sophisticated work and respected clients, but you also value a working pattern that gives you more control over life outside the office.
You could be a solicitor, CILEX professional or an experienced employment law specialist. What matters most is credible advisory experience, sound employment law knowledge and the ability to give clients clear answers they can act on.
