I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You’re applying at an exciting time, as we’re in a period of transition for Mentor to move from being a part of NatWest Group to join the Empowering People Group (EPG).
The two organisations’ values are closely aligned, and the synergies in our offerings for customers make this a natural fit and a great partnership opportunity.
Whilst the role you’ve applied for has been advertised by Natwest Group due to Mentor currently being part of this group, and would be to carry out work for the Mentor provision, the employment would in fact be with AdviserPlus Business Solutions, part of EPG, and not with NatWest. EPG terms and conditions and benefits will therefore apply.
EPG is an award-winning business acting for household brands and names you'll be familiar with. They have offices around the UK and provide comprehensive Human Resource (HR) services, along with SRA-regulated employment law expertise and expanding into H&S via the Mentor offering. They’re committed to delivering exceptional HR and H&S solutions and to their customer and colleague experience.
