We are Hiring: Employment Lawyer
Contract: Temporary / Interim
Rate: £55/hour
Location: Surrey, Hybrid
Working: Hybrid / Remote, with attendance at council offices, meetings and proceedings as required
Role Overview
The Employment Lawyer will provide expert legal advice and representation to the County Council, elected members, officers and committees across complex employment law matters. The role may also support or deputise for the Principal Lawyer and provide guidance to other lawyers within the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a complex and varied employment law caseload with minimal supervision.
- Provide clear, timely and commercially focused legal advice to Council officers and members.
- Advise on employment disputes, HR matters, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Undertake advocacy and representation at hearings/proceedings where required.
- Support the Monitoring Officer on matters involving potential illegality or procedural issues.
- Draft, review and negotiate legal documents, agreements and correspondence.
- Support and mentor junior lawyers and contribute to legal training across the Council.
- Work collaboratively with HR, senior management, external partners and other Council services.
- Contribute to service improvement, legal risk management and efficient case management.
- Manage legal expenditure and make appropriate decisions regarding external counsel/legal representation.
- Maintain accurate electronic case records in line with Lexcel and Council standards.

Essential Requirements
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX eligible to practise in England & Wales.
- Current practising certificate, or eligibility to obtain one.
- Strong UK employment law experience, ideally within a local authority/public-sector environment.
- Significant experience handling complex employment cases and legal advice.
- Experience of advocacy or willingness/aptitude to undertake advocacy.
- Strong drafting, negotiation, influencing and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to manage a demanding caseload independently and meet deadlines.
- Experience supporting, supervising, coaching or managing other lawyers/staff is desirable.
