End-to-End Architect – Digital Commerce Transformation
Role Overview
The End-to-End Architect is accountable for defining and governing the overall architecture strategy for a large-scale retail digital transformation programme. The role provides architectural leadership across customer experience, eCommerce, order management, supply chain, store systems, customer data, integrations, cloud platforms, analytics, security, and operational capabilities.
Working closely with business stakeholders, product teams, enterprise architects, delivery leads, and technology partners, the End-to-End Architect ensures that all solution components align to the target architecture, business objectives, technology standards, and transformation roadmap.
The role acts as the architectural authority across the programme, ensuring that individual workstreams deliver an integrated, scalable, secure, resilient, and future-ready retail ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture Leadership
- Own the end-to-end solution architecture across all transformation workstreams.
- Define current-state, transition-state, and target-state architectures.
- Establish architectural principles, standards, governance, and design patterns.
- Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture strategy and business objectives.
- Lead architecture reviews, design authorities, and technical governance forums.
Business & Transformation Alignment
- Translate business strategy and transformation goals into practical architectural solutions.
- Partner with business leaders, product owners, and programme stakeholders to shape future capabilities.
- Evaluate solution options and provide recommendations based on business value, risk, cost, and scalability.
- Support roadmap planning and technology investment decisions.

Digital Commerce and Customer Experience
- Define architecture supporting digital customer journeys across web, mobile, customer service, store, loyalty, and marketing channels.
- Ensure consistent omnichannel experiences across customer touchpoints.
- Guide architecture for eCommerce platforms, content management, search, personalization, promotions, checkout, and customer account capabilities.
- Drive adoption of composable, headless, and API-first architecture principles where appropriate.
Enterprise Integration Architecture
- Define integration strategy across:
- Commerce platforms
- OMS
- CRM
- Payments
- Loyalty
- PIM
- DAM
- Warehouse and fulfilment systems
- Marketing platforms
- Third-party partner ecosystems
- Establish API, event-driven, microservices, and middleware integration patterns.
- Ensure robust monitoring, observability, resilience, and fault tolerance across integration landscapes.
Data & AI Architecture
- Define architecture for customer, product, inventory, order, pricing, and operational data domains.
- Support enterprise data governance, quality, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
- Enable analytics, customer insights, personalization, AI, and reporting capabilities.
- Ensure data architecture supports both operational and strategic decision-making.
Technology Modernisation
- Drive adoption of modern architecture approaches including:
- Cloud-native architecture
- Microservices
- Event-driven architecture
- MACH principles
- Headless commerce
- Composable architecture
- DevSecOps
- Platform engineering
- Guide legacy modernization and technical debt reduction initiatives.
Security, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure architecture complies with security and regulatory requirements.
- Embed Security-by-Design and Privacy-by-Design principles.
- Support PCI DSS, GDPR, Cyber Security, Identity & Access Management, and risk management controls.
- Conduct architecture risk assessments and mitigation planning.

Delivery & Governance
- Provide architectural oversight across multiple delivery teams and vendors.
- Support programme planning, dependency management, risk identification, and issue resolution.
- Review solution designs, technical designs, and implementation approaches.
- Ensure delivered solutions conform to approved architectural standards.
Stakeholder Management
- Act as trusted advisor to programme sponsors and senior stakeholders.
- Communicate architectural decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Manage relationships with vendors, system integrators, and technology partners.
- Influence strategic technology direction across the transformation programme.
Required Experience
- Extensive experience as an Enterprise Architect, End-to-End Architect or Lead Solution Architect on large-scale retail transformation programmes.
- Proven experience delivering enterprise-wide digital transformation initiatives.
- Strong understanding of retail business processes including:
- Digital Commerce
- Omnichannel Retail
- Store Operations
- Order Management
- Customer Experience
- Loyalty and Marketing
- Experience defining architecture across complex multi-platform ecosystems.
- Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP).
- Experience with API-led integration, microservices, event-driven architecture, and SaaS ecosystems.
- Proven ability to lead architecture across multiple suppliers and delivery teams.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and executive communication skills.
