Energy Policy & Public Affairs Manager

London, England (Hybrid Working)

The Company

A leading UK clean energy business specialising in battery energy storage and electrification is continuing to grow across the UK and international markets.

The business designs, finances, builds and operates large scale battery storage projects, helping support the transition to renewable energy while improving grid flexibility and reducing emissions. With a rapidly growing portfolio of grid connected batteries and operations across the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America, the business is now looking to strengthen its policy and public affairs function.

The Opportunity

This is a high impact role focused on UK energy policy, electricity market regulation and public affairs, with a particular focus on battery energy storage.

You will play a key role in understanding upcoming policy and regulatory changes, developing the company's policy positions and engaging directly with Government, regulators, politicians and wider industry stakeholders.

The role sits within the Business Development function and works closely with senior leadership, Legal, Communications, Commercial and Project Development teams.

Key Responsibilities

Energy Policy & Regulation

  • Monitor and analyse changes to UK energy policy, regulation and electricity market design
  • Develop policy positions and provide clear recommendations to internal stakeholders
  • Lead responses to Government consultations, industry inquiries and policy proposals
  • Work across areas including electricity market reform, network charging, Capacity Market reform, Long Duration Energy Storage and balancing market reform
  • Attend industry code modification groups and relevant working groups
  • Develop policy statements covering areas such as supply chains, environment, health and safety and quality
  • Support policy and regulatory development across international markets where required

Public Affairs & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead public affairs activity across the business
  • Build and maintain relationships with Government, politicians, civil servants, Ofgem, NESO, industry bodies and trade associations
  • Identify opportunities for political engagement, collaboration and industry campaigns
  • Prepare concise policy briefings and position papers for senior leadership
  • Provide policy input to the Communications and Media teams
  • Represent the business at industry events, political conferences and stakeholder forums
  • Support regional and local stakeholder engagement around major energy projects

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years' experience working within UK energy policy
  • Strong understanding of the UK electricity market and recent clean energy policy
  • Good knowledge of battery energy storage and the wider energy transition
  • Experience writing consultation responses, policy papers or similar long form policy documents
  • Established network across the UK energy policy and regulatory landscape
  • Strong understanding of UK political processes and Government engagement
  • Understanding of energy investment and commercial models
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders and representing a business externally
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work in a fast moving environment

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working with or within Government, Ofgem, NESO or National Grid
  • Strong understanding of BESS business models
  • Experience bringing multiple stakeholders together around a shared objective
  • Experience writing press releases, articles, letters to MPs or other short form political content
  • Proven experience influencing policy through advocacy or campaigning
  • Quantitative or data modelling skills
