Energy Technologist
Location: Clydach Nickel Refinery, Swansea
About the Role
At Vale Base Metals, we are committed to producing the critical minerals that power the future. As an Energy Technologist, you will play a key role in supporting the refinery's energy strategy by providing technical expertise, analysing energy performance data, identifying efficiency opportunities, and helping deliver improvements across the site.
Working closely with operational, technical and engineering teams, you will use data-driven insights and technical knowledge to optimise energy usage, support sustainability objectives, and contribute to the safe and efficient operation of our nickel refinery.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong analytical skills and a passion for energy management, process improvement and industrial operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical solutions to optimise energy usage across the refinery, ensuring improvements are considered from a site-wide perspective rather than at an individual plant level.
- Analyse energy consumption data and Monitoring & Targeting (M&T) system outputs to identify trends, inefficiencies and improvement opportunities.
- Make recommendations for corrective actions, operational improvements and energy-saving projects based on data analysis and technical expertise.
- Work collaboratively within cross-functional teams to influence decisions and drive energy performance improvements.
- Support key process safety activities through participation in Management of Change (MOC), HAZOP studies and risk assessments.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure refinery energy requirements are understood and effectively managed.
- Maintain strong working relationships with energy specialists and industry networks to share best practice and develop energy management knowledge.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
