Energy Trading Developer

Application Deadline: 23 October 2026
Department: Finance
Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time
Location: London Office, United Kingdom
Reporting To: Senior Commercial Finance Manager

Description

An opportunity has arisen to recruit an Energy Trading Developer to join our Finance team. The role will be primarily based in our London office, with occasional travel to the Leeds office.

The successful candidate will design, build and continually enhance the data, applications and analytical tools supporting TTEP across the full energy trade lifecycle, from trading positions and operational activity through to settlement, P&L and realised commercial performance, with the initial focus being on Settlements and Commercial Finance, automating manual processes, strengthening controls and developing scalable solutions for settlement assurance, position reporting, P&L and wider commercial analysis across TTEP’s portfolio of CCGT, Biomass and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets.

Our ideal candidate will be commercially curious and genuinely interested in energy trading, with a desire to understand not just how the systems and data work, but how trading decisions are made, how value is created and how operational and settlement outcomes ultimately impact commercial performance. Working closely with various teams across the business, the role will provide the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of how energy is traded, dispatched, settled and ultimately reflected in financial performance. As the role develops, there will be opportunities to work more closely with the Quantitative Analytics and Trading teams on analytical tools, models and applications that support trading decisions and wider commercial optimisation.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Reporting to the Senior Commercial Finance Manager, the key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Develop Across the Energy Trade Lifecycle: Take technical ownership of data flows, applications, automated controls and reporting solutions within Settlements and Commercial Finance, connecting trading positions and operational activity through to settlement, P&L and realised commercial performance.
  • Automate Settlement Processes: Work closely with the Settlements team to understand existing processes, calculations, controls and exceptions, and develop automated solutions across power, gas, carbon, BESS and ancillary services that reduce manual workload and strengthen operational resilience.
  • Develop P&L & Position Reporting: Build and continually improve applications and automated reporting supporting position monitoring, P&L, gross margin analysis and other Commercial Finance requirements.
  • Define Data Requirements: Identify the data required for Settlements and Commercial Finance solutions, collaborate with Data Architecture to make that data available in Microsoft Fabric, and build Python applications and analytical tools that consume and validate it.
  • Integrate Systems: Work with IT and Data Architecture to support integration between Aligne (ETRM), Microsoft Fabric, external market operators and internal systems, ensuring the data required for commercial applications is available and reliable.
  • Design Controls & Exception Reporting: Build automated reconciliation, validation and exception-management tools that improve data quality, strengthen financial and settlement controls and allow issues to be identified and investigated efficiently.
  • Develop Analytical Applications: Replace manual spreadsheet-based processes with scalable applications, dashboards and analytical tools that improve the availability, accuracy and usability of commercial information.
  • Build Reliable Operational Solutions: Design applications and data pipelines with appropriate monitoring, error handling, controls and recovery processes, recognising that developed solutions may support business-critical trading, settlement and financial activities.
  • Maintain Engineering Standards: Develop robust and maintainable software using Git-based version control, testing, code review, documentation and deployment practices, working within TTEP's evolving technical architecture and development standards.
  • Develop Commercial & Market Understanding: Build a strong understanding of TTEP's trading, operational and settlement processes, relevant GB energy market arrangements and the commercial purpose of the applications being developed, ensuring technical solutions accurately reflect underlying business requirements.
  • Collaborate Across Technical & Commercial Teams: Work closely with Settlements, Commercial Finance, Trading, Quantitative Analytics, IT, Data Architecture and external technical providers to translate business requirements into effective and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Support Wider Commercial Analytics: Contribute to the development of credit exposure, collateral monitoring and other data-driven Commercial Finance reporting, controls and analytical capability.
  • Support Wider Trading Development: As the role and technical capability develop, contribute to the development and improvement of Trading tools and analytical applications, working alongside Trading and Quantitative Analytics where appropriate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
