Permanent Service Technician – Cummins Heavy-Duty Engines (Wellingborough)

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Location: Wellingborough Service Workshop


About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Service Technician to perform troubleshooting, repairs, and engine overhauls on a broad range of Cummins heavy-duty engines across industrial, defence, and locomotive applications.

You will be responsible for ensuring all work is carried out to the highest standards, adhering to documented service procedures, health and safety guidelines, and customer delivery deadlines.


Key Responsibilities

  • Engine Troubleshooting & Repairs

    • Perform diagnostics, diagnostic code reading, and repairs on small-capacity to high-horsepower Cummins engines.
    • Follow documented service procedures to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Engine Overhaul Services

    • Conduct full engine dismantling, inspection, cleaning, and reassembly.
    • Reduce engines to original condition with minimum friction loss and maximum performance.
    • Closely follow Cummins service manuals and overhaul specifications.
  • Parts & Equipment Management

    • Select and prepare required parts, tools, and reference documentation for each job.
    • Organise tools and materials to minimise downtime and improve efficiency.

  • Technical Support & Training

    • Assist senior technicians in diagnosing faults and developing repair strategies.
    • Participate in peer training and skill-sharing sessions.
    • Engage in workshop projects and training programs to enhance expertise.
  • Documentation

    • Complete accuracy-checked documentation including:
      • Engine repair logbooks, service records, and warranty claims.
      • Digital timesheets and quality control records via internal systems.
    • Maintain a paper trail for all jobs performed.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance

    • Strict adherence to HS&E regulations, including:
      • Proactive reporting of hazardous conditions to supervisors.
      • Ensuring clean and organised workspaces.
      • Proper handling and disposal of oil and lubricants.
    • Compliance with company safety training requirements (Cummins Work Health & Safety Standard etc.).
  • Customer Service

    • Deliver high-quality, timely service to maintain customer satisfaction.
    • Communicate clear updates on job progress.

Requirements

  • Experience & Qualifications:
    • Minimum 3+ years’ hands-on experience in heavy-duty diesel engine repair/mechanical maintenance.
    • Working knowledge of Cummins engines (preferred but not essential).
    • Familiarity with engines in locomotives, construction, power generation, or defence vehicles.
    • Qualifications in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3, HNC/HND, Degree in Mechanical Engineering).

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficient with diagnostic tools (e.g., Cummins, Bosch, Snap-on).
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
    • Strong troubleshooting methodology for fault finding and resolving complex mechanical issues.
    • Experience preparing warranty claims and documentation.
  • Personal Traits:

    • Attention to detail—ensuring repairs are made to spec before engine return.
    • Time management—generating meaningful service hours per month.
    • Teamwork—collaborating with senior technicians to increase collective knowledge.
    • Reliability—being on time, self-motivated and proactive.

    • Submit a well-presented one-page CV and short cover letter outlining relevant engineering experience.
