Systems Engineer
This benchmark is intended to be used by companies that have generic classifications engaged in research and/or product development encompassing primarily one or more of the following engineering disciplines: electronics, electrical, mechanical, and/or chemical.
This position is an assignment in Barrow-in-Furness, UK. Beginning in April 2027, the initial contract period is two years, with the possibility of annual renewals thereafter up to 5 years. The position will require travel and take residence in the United Kingdom.
The selected candidate will be embedded at BAE Systems (BAES) in the UK, as they will support the BAES’ Platform Nuclear Engineering Department (PNED). BAE has recently established a Waterfront Engineering organization and requested US assistance in integrating the PNED into the wider Waterfront organization. The embed would assist in consulting the Cleanliness Integrated working team, developing technical work and training documents, fostering an engineering driven build culture and leading resolution of in-process build issues. The position will rely heavily on communication with and support from both US new construction shipyards (EB and NNS) to transfer the latest learning and best practices from the US program.

Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with developing technical work documents
- Contribute to the US UK interface for primary systems.
- Provide working level guidance on primary system and component build and test issues.
- Transfer knowledge of current US reactor plant submarine construction and methods of implementation to both peers and supervisory personnel to develop and sustain a Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) resource base for the Dreadnought Submarine build program.
- Provide deck plate mentoring and support to help resolve construction issues
- Act as a primary to secondary liaison on design build issues
- Identify analyses necessary for risk reduction
- Assist in review of system test data and system rectification of emergent issues during test
- Strong communication skills
Must Have
- Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
- Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
- Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiar with VCS Program Build and Test
- 10 years + of applicable experience
- Fluid systems design or operations experience
- Ability to coach and mentor engineering peers
