About This Role

As an Engineer – Bridges, you are expected to have a strong track record in one or, preferably, multiple sectors that BakerHicks operates in. You will ideally be working towards Chartership with the ICE or IStructE, with experience of working on a variety of projects.

You’ll be part of an enthusiastic and committed team of Engineers and Technicians to deliver high-quality output on projects.

Key Purpose

  • Design and specify all aspects of our bridge engineering works in accordance with current guidelines, standards, regulations and project deliverables
  • Contribute to the development and mentoring of our Early Careers population and the continuous improvement of departmental capabilities
  • Champion quality and compliance controls within local teams and projects

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering design and consultancy services on behalf of BakerHicks under the direction of the line manager or project lead.
  • Produce design deliverables (including drawings, specifications and reports), site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison with members of design/construction teams, project management, costing and ensure progress against the project brief.
  • Check calculations and detailed drawings to ensure engineering designs meet appropriate quality and compliance controls, project brief and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
  • Contribute to the preparation of enquiry plans, tender reviews, fee estimate sheets, scopes of work and change controls as required.
  • Be fully conversant with the basics of relevant British Standards and Eurocodes with respect to civil and structural loading, design and specification.
  • Attend design courses and seminars and feedback to the rest of the department where required.
  • Keep up to date with ICE and/or IStructE training and CPD requirements.
  • Represent BakerHicks in external project technical meetings if required.
  • Review specialist subcontractors/suppliers’ calculations and drawings for technical compliance with design intent.

Essential

  • Degree qualified in Civil and/or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Membership with the ICE or IStructE (or equivalent).

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering projects in at least one sector that BakerHicks operates in.

  • Confident communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain complex ideas simply.

  • An ability to develop relationships with both internal and external stakeholders that deliver long term benefits.

  • Considerable structural engineering design, technical detailing and specification writing experience.

  • Proficient in the use of LUSAS analysis software (or equivalent).

  • Good knowledge of CDM Regulations, British Standards and Eurocodes with respect to structural loading, design and specification of structures in steel and reinforced concrete.

  • Eligibility to pass criteria for security clearance required to work on sensitive projects.

  • Working knowledge of BIM software including Autodesk Navisworks.

  • Knowledge of current UK technical standards/ publications and legislation requirements.

  • Knowledge of standard details and solutions, and compliance.

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering multi-disciplinary projects in several sectors that BakerHicks operates in.
  • Experience of contributing to bids, proposals and tender specifications.
  • Understanding of commercial elements of projects.
  • Security clearance obtained.
  • Full clean UK driving license.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to security clearance or security assurance levels.

The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance or assurance level for this role, in line with client and sector requirements.
