Overview
Fuel Recruitment is working with a leading infrastructure and technology organisation that is looking for an Engineering Director – Highways to join its senior leadership team.
This is a strategic leadership role responsible for shaping and delivering engineering programmes across the highways sector. The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary engineering function, driving technical excellence, innovation, governance and resource planning to support major technology investment programmes and business growth.
Working closely with senior operational and engineering stakeholders, you will ensure the successful delivery of complex, integrated engineering solutions that are safe, compliant, commercially effective and aligned to customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a high-performing engineering organisation capable of supporting current and future highways programmes.
- Provide technical leadership across the full engineering lifecycle, including design, development, integration, testing and deployment.
- Direct the engineering delivery of major programmes, managing both internal teams and external engineering partners.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with senior customer stakeholders to support successful delivery and long-term partnerships.
- Drive the development of innovative engineering solutions and architectures that meet customer and business requirements.
- Establish robust engineering governance, assurance, reporting and risk management processes to ensure successful programme delivery.
- Oversee verification and validation activities, ensuring quality, performance and compliance standards are achieved.
- Manage engineering resources effectively to support programme delivery, operational efficiency and future growth.
- Ensure engineering solutions incorporate sustainability, environmental and whole-life asset management considerations.

Key Skills & Experience
- Proven experience leading the engineering delivery of medium to large-scale technology, infrastructure or operational technology programmes.
- Strong background in systems engineering, engineering governance and full lifecycle management.
- Demonstrable experience managing testing, verification, validation and assurance activities within complex environments.
- Experience delivering highly integrated operational technology solutions, including critical networks, data centres, cloud integration, cyber security requirements and supporting applications.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to engage effectively with customers, suppliers and executive leadership teams.
- Successful track record of leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and developing high-performing organisations.
- Degree qualified in Engineering or a related discipline, such as Electrical, Electronic, Software, Systems or Design Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
- Excellent leadership, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to drive performance and support organisational growth.
