Introducing Atlas at Trainline
The Infrastructure Engineering and Tooling Team (aka Atlas) owns the ecosystem that powers Trainline’s platform, including deployment, execution, traffic management, and monitoring.
The team is currently building the next version of Trainline’s infrastructure platform, with a strong focus on:
- Reliability & quality
- Automation & efficiency
- Secure & scalable delivery
A collaborative team of software engineers, DevOps engineers, and platform engineers with varying experience levels works across technologies including Terraform, AWS, Node.js, C#, and Python. This role allows you to grow alongside a dynamic, cross-functional set of colleagues.
As a Platform Engineer, you’ll:
Responsibilities
- Deliver improvements to Trainline’s engineering platforms by contributing to infrastructure that simplifies deployment, improves reliability, and reduces operational risk.
- Write Terraform-based infrastructure while aligning with existing patterns to ensure clear, consistent, maintainable, and reusable models.
- Apply least-privilege and secure-by-default principles across AWS accounts, ensuring our platform environment remains secure and efficient.
- Automate workflows using Node.js, Python, or other scripting capabilities, supporting efficient, repeatable delivery and reducing manual effort.
- Collaborate closely with Senior Platform Engineers, Tech Leads, and Delivery Managers to:
- Understand priorities
- Clarify requirements
- Deliver agreed milestones effectively.
- Test, validate, and deploy changes rigorously through our CI/CD pipelines, ensuring work is thoroughly reviewed before reaching production.
- Maintain transparent delivery updates, proactively raise blockers, and seek support as needed to keep the team aligned and moving forward smoothly.
- Continuously improve your knowledge of Trainline’s platform and engineering practices, while leveraging feedback and teamwork to drive quality improvement.

Requirements
We'd love to hear from you if you have the following skills and experiences:
Key Responsibilities and Requirements

Good experience with AWS services, including:
- ECS
- Lambda
- IAM
- CloudFront
-
Experience with deployment, testing, and maintenance of Terraform modules, and a willingness to implement and improve Readable, reusable, and reliable infrastructure code.

Ability to deliver tasks independently and successfully, while knowing when to seek guidance, collaborate, or escalate risks.

Python or Node.js experience for automation, scripting, or integration tasks, or strong experience with alternative programming languages.

Commitment to secure engineering best practices, including:
- Least-privilege and secure-by-default infrastructure -AWS multi-account strategies -Security frameworks like CDN, WAF, or OIDC-based authentication.
