Role: Structural Design Engineer / Technical Designer
Location: East London/Essex
Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £55,000

The company creates bespoke, high-quality sets, structures and environments for exciting brands and creative projects—from fashion shows and film premieres to exhibitions and immersive experiences.
The Role
This is a varied role combining structural engineering and technical design, with an initial 50/50 split between the two. You will work from early concepts through to fabrication and installation, developing creative ideas into detailed designs, 2D drawings and 3D models. The role will involve selecting materials, developing connections and construction methods, and ensuring designs are safe, practical and efficient to build. Alongside the technical design element, you'll lead the structural engineering side of projects, including analysis, calculations, temporary works and design reviews.
What the role involves
- Developing creative concepts into detailed, buildable designs
- Leading structural design, calculations and engineering assessments
- Designing temporary, event and specialist structures
- Producing 2D drawings using AutoCAD and Rhino
- Creating 3D models and exploring parametric design with tools such as Grasshopper
- Designing in steel, aluminium, timber and other materials
- Developing connections, fixings, lifting arrangements and stability systems
- Working with production and fabrication teams throughout the build
- Providing technical advice and solving challenges as projects develop
- Taking ownership of designs, calculations and technical decisions
- Occasionally visiting sites to see projects brought to life

What the company is looking for
The successful candidate will be a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a degree or equivalent qualification in Civil, Structural or related Engineering, along with solid industry experience.
IStructE chartership is preferred, although ICE chartership is also welcomed. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical capability with an interest in design, creativity and practical problem solving.
You will ideally have:
- Strong AutoCAD and Rhino skills
- Experience with structural analysis and design software
- Good knowledge of structural engineering principles and UK standards
- A practical, solutions-focused approach
- The ability to take ownership and make sound technical decisions
- Strong communication and collaborative skills

Experience with Tekla Structures, GSA, ETABS, SAP2000, Grasshopper or similar software would be advantageous. Experience in temporary works, events, exhibitions, construction, fabrication or specialist structures would also be beneficial.
