Join a team that designs and manufactures aircraft seating products used around the world. Gain hands-on experience in manufacturing, CAD, process improvement and problem-solving while studying towards a recognised engineering apprenticeship.
What will the apprentice be doing?
As a Manufacturing Technician Apprentice, you will support our engineering and production teams to improve manufacturing processes, solve technical challenges and help deliver high-quality products for the aerospace industry.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Investigating manufacturing issues and helping develop effective solutions
- Testing and evaluating improvements to production processes
- Designing and coordinating the manufacture of production aids and tooling
- Updating and improving assembly procedures used on the shop floor
- Monitoring manufacturing activities to ensure procedures are followed correctly
- Carrying out work studies to identify opportunities for increased efficiency
- Supporting continuous improvement projects and workflow enhancements
- Assessing engineering designs to ensure they can be manufactured effectively
- Creating and updating manufacturing documentation, drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Supporting Lean Manufacturing and 5S activities across the business
- Developing your understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Using 2D and 3D modelling software to support engineering projects
This role offers a great balance of practical workshop experience and office-based engineering activities. At Franklin Products, no two days are the same. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, gain valuable industry knowledge and play a part in creating products used by passengers around the world. Course contents
- Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, segregation of resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO). European Norm (EN).
- Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
- Apply scientific, technical or engineering principles.
- Apply problem solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
- Organise, plan and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
- Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
- Produce job specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals and specifications.
- Provide support and guidance for handover of work to stakeholders. For example, checklists, product or process status, access to supporting documents.
- Record information - paper based or electronic. For example, energy usage, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, checklists.
- Follow standard operating procedures.
- Follow manufacturer's instructions. For example, safe instructions for use of products, processes and machinery.
- Apply quality assurance and control principles and practices. For example, conduct physical checks, take samples, inspections or tests.
- Apply continuous improvement techniques.
- Apply team working principles.
- Communicate in writing with others for example, stakeholders, colleagues, and managers.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
- Use information and digital technology. Comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations and policies.
- Carry out and record learning and development activities.
- Apply equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.

You will work towards the: Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician Apprenticeship
Training will be delivered through day release to MK College alongside your workplace learning.
GCSE in:
- Maths (grade 9-5)
- English (grade 9-4)
- Science (grade 9-4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

A Merit in A-Level Mechanical Engineering, National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or similar is required.
The role combines hands-on manufacturing work and computer-based engineering tasks, including tooling, investigations and 2D/3D CAD.
You'll work in an aerospace manufacturing environment and receive training in health & safety, risk assessments and GD&T.

For the right candidate, successful completion of this apprenticeship may lead to a full-time, more senior Manufacturing Engineer role in the Operations department. This will see you play a bigger role in projects that help influence the manufacturing capability of the company.
