Senior Geotechnical Engineer – St Albans

Location: AECOM St Albans Office, 10 Bricket Road Work Location Model: Hybrid


About the Role

Our Ground Engineering team in St Albans is seeking a dynamic Senior Geotechnical Engineer who combines deep technical expertise with innovative thinking.

This role is perfect for someone passionate about excelling in geotechnical design, mentoring juniors, and leading complex projects while contributing to AECOM’s mission of building a better future.


What You’ll Be Doing

Core Responsibilities:

  • Project Delivery: Own technical quality, budget adherence, and programme delivery for projects across sectors like energy, rail, highways, water, and defence.
  • Expertise & Innovation:
    • Lead technical reviews and client meetings, proposing alternative solutions and owning key decisions.
    • Contribute to design concepts, parametetric assessments, and ground condition interpretations.
  • Commercial & Client Engagement:
    • Develop fee proposals and bids for internal/external clients, ensuring high satisfaction.
    • Advise on commercial studies and feasibility assessments.
  • Mentorship & Growth:
    • Mentor junior engineers with expertise in geotechnical design methodologies.
    • Drive your own career development (e.g., aiming for Chartered Engineer status).

What We Require:

  • Lead geotechnical input across the project lifecycle—from desk studies, feasibility, ground investigations, reports, drawings, to final design.
  • Independently budget, programme, and deliver project deliverables.
  • Work collaboratively in UK & international project teams.

About You

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree Qualification(s):
    • BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering or BSc/MSc in Geotechnical Engineering.
    • Preferred: Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) status (or progression support within a year).
  • Technical Skills:
    • Deep knowledge of UK ground conditions and investigation techniques.
    • Expertise in design codes/standards (e.g., BS EN Eurocodes, DTp GE7) and innovative practices.
    • Hands-on geotechnical design: earthworks, foundations, retaining structures, slope stability.
    • familiarity with software like Slope/W, Wallap, Plaxis, Soiltress.
    • Ability to generate interpretive reports, construction drawings, specifications, and risk assessments.
    • Knowledge of CDM Regulations and Safety in Design.
    • ideally, experience in transportation, highways, railways, or nuclear sectors.
  • Soft Skills & Compliance:
    • Strong written/verbal communication, including technical presentations.
    • Strong analytical skills to problem-solve sophisticated project challenges.
    • Clean UK driving licence (essential).
    • Willingness to travel throughout the UK.

Desirable:

  • SafetyNet, gINT, or Open Ground proficiency.
    • Good understanding of international ground conditions (e.g., VM, ICE).
  • Exposure to data analysis and mapping tools (e.g., SiteVision GRASS).
