Join National Gas and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is responsible for operating and maintaining Britain's national gas transmission network, helping to keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm.

We manage the critical infrastructure that safely and reliably transport gas across Great Britain, supporting the energy security that millions of people depend on every day.

While delivering for Britain today, we're also preparing for tomorrow. Through innovation, investment, and the development of future energy infrastructure, we're helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for generations to come.

As a graduate, you'll be given meaningful responsibility from the start, supported to develop professionally, and empowered to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the nation's energy future. Whether you're solving complex challenges, driving innovation, or delivering essential services, you'll play an important role in an organisation with genuine purpose.

Join us and help shape the future of energy.

About the Role

Join our Regional Investment & Planning team in the West and play a part in shaping the future of Britain's energy network. You'll work alongside engineering, project, and planning colleagues, helping to support the decisions and activities that keep our network running safely, reliably, and efficiently.

As an Engineering Graduate, you'll gain experience across a wide range of engineering and planning activities. You'll support projects, help coordinate work across teams, and develop an understanding of how engineering improvements are identified, prioritised, and delivered across the National Gas network.

Day-to-day, you could be:

  • Supporting engineering and business improvement projects.
  • Helping to plan and coordinate activities across multiple teams.
  • Reviewing data and information to support decision-making.
  • Tracking progress, actions, and key milestones on projects.
  • Preparing reports, updates, and presentations for colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Working with teams across the business to help deliver successful outcomes.

Throughout the programme, you'll gain experience in engineering, business planning, project coordination, and investment planning. You'll develop strong problem-solving, communication, and organisational skills while building an understanding of how engineering decisions support the safe and reliable operation of Britain's gas transmission network.

About You

We're looking for someone who is curious, motivated, and eager to learn. You don't need to know everything from day one, but you should be excited about solving problems, understanding how things work, and developing both your technical and professional skills.

You'll be someone who:

  • Enjoys tackling problems and finding practical solutions.
  • Likes working with information and using evidence to support decisions.
  • Is organised and able to manage different tasks and priorities.
  • Builds positive relationships and works well with others.
  • Communicates confidently with a range of people.
  • Takes ownership of their work and enjoys learning new things.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

A standout candidate will combine a strong STEM or engineering background with curiosity, a willingness to learn, and an interest in how large infrastructure projects and engineering improvements are planned and delivered. You'll enjoy working with data, thinking logically, and sharing your ideas with others.

We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

What you'll need

You'll hold, or be on track to achieve, a degree in Engineering or a related STEM subject.

We're open to a range of disciplines, provided you can demonstrate an interest in engineering and an ability to understand technical concepts.

We're interested in your potential and transferable skills as much as your academic background. A strong application might include examples of:

  • Solving problems using data, research, or evidence.
  • Managing projects, coursework, or team activities.
  • Working collaboratively to achieve a shared goal.
  • Organising tasks and balancing multiple priorities.
  • Presenting information clearly to different audiences.

Experience or exposure to project management, business planning, or financial concepts would be beneficial, but it's not essential. What matters most is your enthusiasm to learn, your curiosity, and your willingness to get involved.

A good application will include a cover letter to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Be sure to include any other relevant experience or university modules.

Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you, and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

The Essentials

This is an 18-month fixed-term graduate programme. You must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme.

Throughout the programme, you'll spend time working with colleagues across the business, giving you exposure to different teams and areas of National Gas. While you'll mainly be based at either our Bristol or Warwick office, there may be occasional visits to operational sites and meetings within the region to support your learning and development. You will not need to have a driving licence or personal vehicle to be considered for this role.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels.

What you can expect from us

You’ll receive a range of benefits that reward your great work.

  • Starting annual salary of £34,646, with annual performance-based increases.
  • A generous holiday allowance of 26 days plus statutory bank holidays, with the option to buy and sell additional days (capped at 5 days).
  • 2 paid days each financial year to volunteer for a worthwhile cause.
  • A generous pension scheme with a double-match contribution – if you contribute 6%, we’ll contribute 12%, helping you build a strong financial future.
  • Professional development and career progression.
  • Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24 hours per day.
  • A free on-site gym, as well as complimentary classes, at our Warwick Head Office.

The 'nice to knows'

Bristol is the preferred base for this role, although applications from graduates who are located in Warwick will also be considered. As part of our hybrid working approach, you'll typically spend around three days a week in the office, with the rest of your time split between home and office working. This balance will give you the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues, build your network, and gain hands-on experience. There may also be occasional visits to operational sites to help broaden your understanding of the business.

You'll start in a large cohort of other graduates and apprentices, where you'll attend an in-person induction in early September 2027, fostering strong workplace relationships that will build the foundation of your future networks.

Your next steps…

You'll be offered additional support and guidance throughout the application process by our Early Careers team. Eligible applications will be reviewed by a human, every step of the way.

You’re only able to apply for one of our graduate schemes, so please consider this carefully. When reviewing your application, if we feel you might be a good fit for something else, we'll be sure to let you know.

Following a successful online application, you'll be invited to complete an online assessment. Candidates who progress to the next stage will then be invited to a virtual solo interview. The final stage of the process is an in-person Assessment Centre in December or January. We'll share further details closer to the time, including the date and location.

Applications close on Sunday 8th November 2026. Each year, we receive a large volume of applications, so we'd encourage you to apply early.

At National Gas, we value everyone's unique contributions and perspectives. If you require reasonable adjustments to complete the application process, please contact us at earlycareers@nationalgas.com
