Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As an Apprentice Plant / FLT Technician, you will play an important role in helping to keep our equipment operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. You will learn from experienced professionals while developing your technical skills in a real working environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the maintenance, servicing, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and control systems
- Support fault-finding activities and help diagnose and repair equipment issues under supervision
- Complete maintenance records and associated paperwork to ensure compliance and operational safety
- Assist with both planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown repairs to maximise equipment uptime
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities
- Follow all health and safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements
- Learn and apply safe systems of work, including permit-to-work procedures
- Engage fully with your apprenticeship training programme and successfully achieve all learning milestones
- Build strong working relationships and communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and other departments
- Attend technical training, development sessions, and classroom-based learning as required
- Assist with the stripping, overhaul, rebuilding, and testing of equipment and machinery
- Help maintain high housekeeping standards, ensuring work areas remain clean, organised, and safe
- Demonstrate a positive attitude towards safe working practices and continuous improvement
As our Engineering Apprentice, we’ll help you to become qualified so you can:
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance
- Provide maintenance of equipment
- Modify, test, and inspect condition-based monitoring and fault finding with our systems
- Help improve systems on our sites where required
- Work on technology which monitors and controls all aspects of processes and their performance across the site
- Carry out risk assessments and method statements to ensure activities are always completed in a safe manner
In addition:
- Position, assemble, install and dismantle mechanical plant and equipment which may include pumps, valves, gearboxes, pipework, to agreed specifications
- Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance procedures on mechanical plant and equipment
- Replace, repair or remove components in mechanical plant and equipment and ensure its return to operational condition
- Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in mechanical plant and equipment

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Review and use information. For example, work instructions, drawings, design specifications, and plant configurations.
- Use planning, prioritising, organising, and time management techniques to plan tasks.
- Identify and organise resources to complete tasks. For example, consumables.
- Respond and adapt to work demands. For example, adapt working methods to reflect changes in working environment, re-prioritise workloads to react to breakdowns and fault scenarios.
- Identify equipment to work on. Check plant configuration is as defined.
- Prepare the work area for maintenance tasks.
- Identify environmental and health and safety hazards and risks and apply control measures.
- Apply health, safety, and environmental procedures in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, signage and barriers, working at height, confined spaces, and COSHH.
- Follow security procedures. For example, site access, document classification, and securing assets.
- Follow emergency incident and response procedures.
- Apply sustainability principles. For example, minimising waste.
- Segregate items for reuse, recycling, and waste.
- Use mathematical principles and formulae to support engineering maintenance.

Training schedule
Training will be at North Lindsey College where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer.
Day release.
You will undertake the Engineering Maintenance Technician Dual Discipline standard.
You will undertake Functional Skills for English and/or maths if needed.
You will undertake both on and off-the-job training by a team of industry qualified professionals to give you the best skills, knowledge and experience that will help you.

Essential qualifications

Other requirements
You must be able to travel to and from work and college. Which will mean having access to your own transport. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
