Because of the nature of the work associated with this post, it is subject to special nationality rules and is restricted to individuals who are UK British Nationals. For this role, due to government security requirements, the term "UK Nationals" excludes anyone who is a dual national or naturalised British citizen (that is, originally a foreign national).

We maintain a flexible working policy to allow for hybrid working when appropriate. Teams typically spend around 60% of their time in the office, although this may vary depending on project and business needs. At times you may need to attend the office up to 5 days per week. This role may also require some travel both within and outside the UK.

Main purpose of the Role:

The Engineering Manager will lead and develop high-performing software engineering teams, ensuring the successful delivery of customer programmes while driving continuous improvement across the engineering function. The role combines people leadership, technical understanding, project delivery, and stakeholder management to support SeeByte's growth and the development of world-leading autonomous maritime technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage customer-facing programmes, reporting progress and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead and develop engineering teams through effective line management, coaching, mentoring, and career development.
  • Play a key role in SeeByte's Engineering Management Team, contributing to resource planning, capability development, and recruitment.
  • Drive the evolution of SeeByte's engineering function through continuous improvement of processes, tools, and ways of working, ensuring the organisation remains efficient, scalable, and innovative.
  • Support Sales and Business Development activities by providing technical expertise to scope, shape, and cost new opportunities.

Key skills, experience and qualifications:

Essential:

  • Degree in Software Development, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience demonstrating a strong technical understanding.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary technical teams within a software engineering environment.
  • Experience developing, mentoring, and managing engineers.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience working directly with customers and project partners.
  • Good understanding of software engineering principles, development practices, and delivery methodologies.
  • Collaborative and enthusiastic team player with an interest in autonomous systems and emerging technologies.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to support customer engagements, demonstrations, trials, and project delivery activities.
  • Eligible to apply for UK Security Clearance.

  • You have experience managing software teams with a focus on autonomous systems, machine learning, autonomy, simulation, or command and control systems.
  • You have experience working in the Defence industry, and/or have experience with secure by design principles
  • Experience of project management, including planning, scheduling, budget management, and risk management.
  • Experience delivering software projects using Agile methodologies.
