The Opportunity
I’m currently headhunting an Engineering Manager for a high-growth, award-winning FinTech scale-up based in London. They are revolutionising cross-border payments and corporate FX, building scalable, high-volume alternative banking solutions.
In this role, you’ll take ownership of their core Banking & FX Tribe. You will lead a team of 6–8 engineers delivering the core systems that handle real-world money movement: payment processing, FX pricing, double-entry ledgers, reconciliation, bank integrations, and FIX protocol connectivity.
This isn’t a hands-off administrative role—they need a strong technical leader who can review system architectures, challenge senior engineers, and break tie-break technical decisions when needed.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and grow a team of 6–8 engineers. Handle everything from 1-on-1s and performance development to hiring and onboarding.
- Delivery & OKRs: Own the tribe’s delivery roadmap. Forecast accurately, sequence work effectively, and communicate progress or blockers transparently to leadership early.
- Pragmatic Agile: Strip away unnecessary agile ceremony and double down on short feedback loops, small releases, and adaptability.
- Production & Observability: Oversee business-critical services running live in production. Lead blameless incident reviews and maintain high standards for testing, security, and on-call health.
- AI Strategy: Direct how the team leverages AI tools in daily workflows (they actively use Claude Code) to improve velocity without compromising code quality.
- Stakeholder & Compliance Alignment: Work directly with Product, Design, and Risk/Compliance teams to ship features with clear audit trails.

What My Client Is Looking For
- People Management: Proven experience managing software engineering teams through hiring, performance management, and tough conversations.
- Tech Stack: Strong technical background in C#, Azure, and SQL—enough depth to review designs, spot architectural risks, and earn respect across senior engineers.
- Distributed Systems: Real-world experience delivering asynchronous, event-driven, production-critical software.
- Direct experience with payment scheme/bank integrations, FX engines, double-entry ledgers, or FIX protocol connectivity.
- Practical AI Experience: Hands-on experience integrating AI coding tools into development cycles.
- Ownership Mindset: Comfortable absorbing ambiguity, focusing on delivery over perfection, and holding a high bar for software quality.
