Aflac Northern Ireland Engineering Manager Role

Aflac is building the specialist capability required to move AI from experimentation into scaled business impact. These roles will help transform customer and employee experiences, strengthen our enterprise AI, cloud and data foundations, and embed AI throughout the software development lifecycle so our teams can deliver better solutions faster, safely and responsibly.

Team Context

At Aflac Northern Ireland, our engineering teams build reusable services, customer-facing applications and backend systems. This team works in an AWS cloud environment and delivers both serverless and client-server solutions.

As Engineering Manager, you will lead a team delivering shared services and AI-enabled engineering solutions. You will guide the team as technology changes, while creating a culture of learning, quality and practical innovation.

Role Context

We are looking for an Engineering Manager who is passionate about people leadership and balancing technical delivery. You will lead engineers, support adoption of modern cloud and AI-enabled approaches, and help teams deliver customer value.

You will work closely with the Director of Engineering and senior stakeholders across Product, Architecture and Data teams.

Skills and Experience

We're looking for a blend of technical expertise and proven leadership capabilities. Don't rule yourself out if you don't have everything listed—your leadership approach, growth mindset, and passion for developing people and technology matter most.

Essential Requirements

  • 5+ years software engineering experience with at least 2+ years demonstrating technical leadership
  • Proven people leadership including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and team development
  • AWS platform expertise including Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, and serverless architectures
  • Frontend development understanding particularly Angular.js or modern JavaScript frameworks
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or STEM (or comparable experience)
  • Applicants must be located in Northern Ireland and hold the relevant right to work status. We are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship

Desirable

  • AWS Step Functions: Complex workflow orchestration and state machine design
  • AWS Glue: Data pipeline development, ETL processes, and data cataloguing
  • AI/ML platforms: Amazon Kiro, SageMaker, or similar AI integration experience
  • Event-driven architecture: EventBridge, SQS, SNS, and Kafka/MSK
  • DevOps & observability: CloudWatch, X-Ray, Dynatrace, CI/CD pipelines
  • Database technologies: DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, DocumentDB, Neptune

Please note that this is NOT a remote role, you will be required to come into the office 2 days per week.
