ROLE SUMMARY
The Mechanical Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and developing a team of mechanical engineers engaged in the design, development, and delivery of robotic automation systems and special-purpose machinery. The role combines technical leadership, people management, project oversight, and strategic planning to ensure innovative, high-quality, and cost-effective automation solutions are delivered to customers.
The successful candidate will drive engineering best practices, ensure compliance with industry standards, and collaborate closely with controls, software, electrical, manufacturing, and project management teams to deliver world-class robotic automation systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engineering Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical design engineers.
- Establish engineering standards, methodologies, and best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement within mechanical engineering processes.
- Conduct design reviews and provide technical guidance throughout project lifecycles.
- Manage engineering resources, priorities, and workload allocation.
Mechanical Design & Development
- Oversee the design of robotic cells, automated production lines, machine tooling, end-of-arm tooling (EOAT), fixtures, conveyors, and bespoke automation equipment.
- Ensure designs meet customer specifications, functionality, manufacturability, maintainability, and safety requirements.
- Review and approve engineering drawings, calculations, and technical documentation.
- Support concept generation, feasibility studies, and prototype development.

Project Delivery
- Work closely with Project Managers to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Monitor project progress and identify risks, bottlenecks, and resource requirements.
- Provide technical leadership during commissioning, installation, and customer acceptance phases.
- Support change management and engineering design modifications.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with Controls Engineering, Software Development, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Quality teams.
- Support supplier selection and technical evaluations.
- Participate in customer design reviews and technical meetings.
- Assist sales teams with technical proposals, quotations, and solution development.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure machine designs comply with relevant legislation and standards, including:
- Machinery Directive / UKCA / CE requirements
- ISO 12100
- ISO 10218
- ISO 13849
- EN 60204
- Relevant industry safety standards
- Support risk assessments and machine safety reviews.
- Promote a strong engineering safety culture.
Strategic & Operational Management
- Develop engineering department KPIs and performance metrics.
- Support budgeting, resource planning, and recruitment activities.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, standardisation, and cost reduction.
- Contribute to long-term engineering and technology roadmaps.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum 8-10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Minimum 3-5 years of leadership or management experience.
- Experience in robotic automation, special purpose machinery, manufacturing automation, or industrial equipment.
Preferred
- Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or Automation.
- Professional membership (IMechE or equivalent).
- Project Management qualification (PRINCE2, PMP, etc.).
Technical Skills
- Advanced 3D CAD experience (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, CATIA, or similar).
- Experience designing robotic automation systems.
- Knowledge of pneumatics, servo systems, actuators, and motion control.
- Familiarity with industrial robots (ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa, Universal Robots, etc.).
- Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) knowledge.
- Engineering calculations and mechanical analysis.
- Understanding of machine safety standards and compliance requirements.
- Experience with PLM/PDM systems.
Salary Range
£65,000 - £75,000
