About The Role
At Simplyhealth, we're on a mission to improve access to healthcare for all in the UK. As an Engineering Manager, you'll play a key role in helping us deliver innovative digital health solutions that make a real difference to our customers.
You'll lead multiple engineering squads, creating the conditions for teams to thrive while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, secure and scalable software. Working closely with Lead Software Engineers, Architects, Product Managers, Delivery Managers and other stakeholders, you'll balance people leadership, technical direction and delivery excellence to achieve outstanding business outcomes.
This Is a Hands-on Leadership Role Where You'll
- Lead, coach and develop software engineers and technical leaders, supporting their performance, progression and career growth.
- Build healthy, high-performing teams that are empowered to deliver.
- Set and drive technical direction across squads, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure and aligned to wider architectural goals.
- Balance roadmap delivery with technical debt, resilience, security and long-term platform sustainability.
- Drive engineering excellence through modern software development practices, quality engineering principles and DevOps approaches.
- Improve delivery effectiveness through agile ways of working, including Scrum and Kanban.
- Collaborate with Product, Delivery and Architecture teams to ensure engineering effort is focused on the highest-value outcomes.
- Manage technical risks, dependencies and cross-team trade-offs while providing clear stakeholder communication.
- Champion continuous improvement across engineering capability, tooling, standards and ways of working.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, practices and methodologies that can create value for the business.

About You
We're looking for an experienced engineering leader who combines strong people management skills with technical credibility and a passion for building great teams and products.
To Be Successful In This Role, You'll Bring
- Proven experience leading and developing software engineering teams or multiple squads.
- Experience line managing engineers, including performance management, mentoring, coaching and career development.
- A recent background in software engineering with strong technical understanding and credibility.
- Experience defining technical direction and influencing architectural decisions.
- Strong knowledge of software engineering principles, quality practices and modern development approaches.
- Experience working with technologies and frameworks such as C#, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript or Python.
- Experience designing and delivering distributed, cloud-native or microservice-based solutions.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, software architecture and design patterns.
- Experience with DevOps tooling and practices, including CI/CD, Git workflows and modern development toolchains.
- Experience working closely with Product, Delivery and business stakeholders to deliver outcomes.
- The ability to balance delivery priorities with quality, security, maintainability and operational excellence.
- A collaborative leadership style with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- A passion for continuous improvement and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work.
