Context

As part of the Technical Change function, the purpose of the Engineering Manager role is to develop and lead on implementation of a strategy to integrate the design. This will involve the following 3 key areas:

  • residual scope to resolve design interfaces
  • instructed design changes to align with Subcontractor proposals
  • instructed new design scope

Missions/Main Duties

Further details of the key responsibilities for this role are as follows:

  • Develop a strategy for design integration and prepare updates to the Design Management Plan and Interface Management Plan to record the agreed strategy.
  • Alongside the line manager, lead on Design Team implementation of the strategy for design integration and ensure the lead designer workstreams are linked to Subcontract works packages.
  • Ensure progress and status on design integration is monitored and reported effectively to the wider project on behalf of the Design Team.

  • Ensure the Design Interface Managers apply the Interface Management Plan consistently to develop the scope for Subcontractor design interfaces and support their engagement with the wider project team.
  • Ensure the Design Team apply the stakeholder model review procedure and decisions on WSP actions are made, such as assessments to inform technical change workstreams.
  • Ensure Lead Designers apply the Interface Management Plan for the detailed design.
  • Ensure the Design Team apply the Interface Management Plan for the Subcontractor design interfaces and adopt a consistent approach.
  • Present on the design integration strategy to the Design Team, and to the wider project team, including key stakeholders such as Network Rail and interfacing rail system contractors.
  • Continuous improvement to the strategy for design integration and associated processes develop improvement measures for consultation and stakeholder agreement and then alongside the line manager, lead on implementation by the project team.
  • Ensure associated risks are escalated to the Senior Leadership Team and the client as required.

Profile/Skills

  • Experience in a design management role involving engagement with stakeholders on design, including interfacing designers, asset owners / operators and subcontractor designers;
  • Experience on civil engineering or building projects in the UK with railway system interfaces;
  • Experience of line manager responsibility for design / technical managers;
  • Effective communicator, both listening to others and explaining own considerations to seek agreement on what is best for project;
  • Positive approach to teamwork and collaboration, demonstrate leadership and proactiveness with the rest of the project team, including the client and key stakeholders;
  • Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Teams.
  • Experience of supporting systems integration activities;
  • Experience of applying the NEC conditions of contract;
  • Experience of model exchanges with third party designers in a common data environment;
  • Experience of using CEMAR or Eb systems.
