Engineering Manager – Infrastructure Division
Location: Harrow, London / Project Sites
Employment: Permanent
Working Hours: 8:00 am – 5:30 pm
We are recruiting for an Engineering Manager to join the Infrastructure division of an established civil engineering and construction contractor.
This senior technical position leads the engineering design function and provides expert engineering support across infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will act as a key technical authority within the business, supporting project teams, reviewing engineering proposals and ensuring engineering challenges are identified and resolved before they become operational issues.
This role is a good fit for a Chartered Senior or Principal Engineer with a strong Temporary Works design background who is ready to step into an Engineering Manager position. The position will be split between the company’s head office in Harrow and visits to project sites as required.
The Role
You will lead the Engineering Design team within the Infrastructure division, reporting to the Head of Engineering while operating with a high level of independence. You will act as a subject matter expert for engineering and Temporary Works matters, supporting project teams and representing the contractor in technical discussions with clients, designers and other stakeholders.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing technical leadership and engineering support across infrastructure projects
- Identifying and resolving engineering challenges before they impact project delivery
- Leading and supporting a small engineering design team
- Ensuring engineering teams have the appropriate resources, support and development opportunities
- Assessing Temporary Works Coordinators and ensuring Temporary Works procedures are correctly implemented
- Ensuring appropriate design checks are completed for both in-house and outsourced Temporary Works designs
- Reviewing engineering proposals produced by project and tender teams
- Providing internal peer reviews and technical challenge where required
- Identifying changes from tender assumptions and understanding the potential commercial implications
- Identifying and developing value-engineering opportunities
- Supporting the implementation of the Quality Management System and ensuring appropriate project plans are in place
- Producing technical reports, engineering documentation and recommendations
- Working directly with client teams and clearly communicating the contractor's technical position
- Providing independent engineering input where the appropriate technical solution may differ from the initial operational approach

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
