Engineering Manager
£110,000–£130,000 + bonus + excellent benefits
London – 3 days per week in the office
We’re working with one of the UK’s leading FinTech's as they continue to scale their technology organisation and invest in the engineering teams behind a rapidly growing customer base. They’re looking for an Engineering Manager who is first and foremost a great people leader.
This is a hands-off management role, focused on developing a high-performing team, creating the right environment for engineers to succeed and helping people navigate challenges, performance and progression.
The Role
You’ll lead a single engineering squad of around 8–12 people, working alongside a Product Manager and a team of predominantly Software Engineers (Java, Kotlin)
This isn't a role for someone looking to spend their time coding or making technical decisions. Instead, you'll provide the leadership, coaching and support that enables the team to perform at its best.

You'll work closely with Product and other Engineering leaders, helping the team establish priorities, remove blockers and continuously improve how they operate.
You'll need to be comfortable having difficult conversations, managing conflict and addressing performance issues when required, while maintaining an empathetic and supportive approach.
You'll be responsible for:
- Creating an environment where people can perform, develop and progress
- Providing regular coaching, feedback and career development
- Managing performance effectively, including having experience with PIPs and challenging performance conversations
- Handling conflict within the team and resolving issues constructively
- Building trust and psychological safety while maintaining high standards
- Understanding the individual needs and motivations of different team members
- Working closely with the Product Manager to create a strong, collaborative squad
- Supporting the team through change, ambiguity and competing priorities
- Helping engineers take ownership while providing the right level of support
- Contributing to the wider Engineering Management community

You'll ideally be someone who:
- Is confident handling conflict and navigating challenging interpersonal situations
- Leads with empathy without compromising on accountability or standards
- Can adapt their management style to different individuals and situations
- Has a strong understanding of software engineering environments and can comfortably operate alongside technically strong engineers
- Builds strong relationships with Product and other stakeholders
- Communicates clearly, openly and with empathy
- Takes ownership and can operate independently in ambiguous environments
You'll need enough technical understanding to earn the respect of experienced Software Engineers, understand the challenges they face and ask the right questions.
