Role: Engineering Manager (Java, React & React Native)
Location: London / Manchester / Staines (Hybrid Working 3-4 days office based)

Sparta Global is looking for passionate and committed individuals who want to kickstart a career in technology! You must be willing to complete full-time training in our Business Solutions programme and will then be assigned to work in a junior role with one of our trusted client partners as a 'Spartan' consultant. We are seeking an engineering manager to join our team and help our clients navigate the rapidly evolving world of business, helping our clients to solve issues, create value, maximise growth and improve business performance. In this role, you will use your expertise to identify and solve complex problems, assess the business needs of our clients, and provide strategic guidance on how to best utilise technology and other solutions to meet their goals.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Engineering for our client, you will be responsible for leading multiple software engineering squads developing cloud-based web and mobile applications. You'll work closely with Product Managers, Architects, UX Designers, Delivery Leads, and stakeholders across the business to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality products.
You will foster a culture of engineering excellence, continuous improvement, collaboration, and innovation whilst developing the technical and professional growth of your teams.

- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Software Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Technical Leads.
- Create an inclusive, high-performing engineering culture focused on learning, innovation, and accountability.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, career development planning, and mentoring.
- Support recruitment activities and help build diverse, talented engineering teams.
- Promote engineering best practice, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
Technology & Engineering Delivery
- Lead the design, development, and support of modern web and mobile applications using Java, React, and React Native.
- Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and aligned to enterprise architecture standards.
- Drive engineering excellence through code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD practices, and DevOps principles.
- Collaborate with Product and Architecture teams to define technical roadmaps and delivery plans.
- Support technical decision-making and architectural design for customer-facing digital platforms.
- Manage technical risks, dependencies, and delivery challenges across multiple teams.
- Champion Agile delivery practices and continuous improvement across engineering squads.
Stakeholder Management
- Partner with senior business and technology stakeholders to understand priorities and deliver business value.
- Provide clear communication on delivery progress, risks, technical decisions, and team performance.
- Build strong relationships across Product, Design, Security, Data, Infrastructure, and Operations teams.
- Support strategic digital transformation initiatives across the organisation.
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience leading software engineering teams in a complex enterprise environment.
- Strong hands-on background in:
- Java (Spring Boot)
- React.js
- React Native
- REST API development
- Microservices architecture
- Experience building and deploying cloud-native applications (Azure preferred).
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps methodologies, and automated testing frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of Agile delivery methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
- Experience managing engineers across multiple product teams.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Experience with performance management, mentoring, coaching, and talent development.

Desirable
- Experience within healthcare, health-tech, insurance, or regulated industries.
- Knowledge of containerisation technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience implementing observability and monitoring solutions.
- Exposure to AI-enabled digital products and modern customer experience platforms.
- Experience leading distributed or offshore engineering teams.
