Legal & General is recruiting for the role of Engineering Manager (Java & Spring Boot). Lead and develop an engineering team while staying hands-on in delivering modern software solutions. Work with product, architecture and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable and reliable technology and improve engineering practice.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and develop engineers to deliver high-quality, secure and reliable software solutions.
  • Plan and oversee delivery activity to achieve predictable and effective outcomes.
  • Design and build scalable, maintainable software while remaining an active hands-on engineer.
  • Coach and mentor engineers through feedback and structured development plans.
  • Embed quality, testing and security into day-to-day engineering practices.
  • Use delivery metrics, operational insights and observability data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage operational readiness, incident response processes and technical debt to keep systems resilient.
  • Work with product, architecture and business stakeholders to remove blockers and deliver customer value.

  • Significant hands-on Java engineering experience is required.
  • Experience of building and operating Spring Boot microservices is required.
  • A strong understanding of modern software architecture principles is required.
  • Experience leading engineering teams and developing people through coaching and mentoring is required.
  • Knowledge of test-driven development, quality engineering practices and automated testing approaches is required.
  • Experience with CI/CD practices, version control workflows and software delivery pipelines is required.
