Engineering Manager — Own the Backend Behind the Data That Runs Modern Football
Every top-flight football club analyses the game differently now than it did five years ago and that shift runs through data infrastructure most fans will never see.
This is a chance to become the Engineering Manager and lead the team who are building it...
We are looking for a Engineering Manager to run two squads (~8 engineers) building the platform and API layer behind a market-leading football analytics product. This is the kind of tool used inside the walls of Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A clubs to make real tactical and recruitment decisions. Liverpool. Manchester City. Clubs competing at the very top of the European game, working off data your team ships.
The are looking for a former senior/staff engineer with deep hands-on technical depth who transitioned into engineering management, retaining the credibility to challenge system design decisions while now focusing on leading and growing the team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Why this role is genuinely rare:
Most EM roles ask you to choose between staying technical and going all-in on people leadership. This one refuses that trade-off. You'll be deep enough in architecture and system design to challenge senior engineers and shape how the platform evolves.
At the same time, you're building and growing a high-performing team, not writing code day to day.
It also sits at a genuine intersection point that's hard to find elsewhere: a product with real end users and real commercial stakes (not internal tooling), an API-first data platform doing interesting engineering problems at scale, and a business that is actively investing in AI-augmented engineering as a working practice, not a slide in a strategy deck.
What you need:
- Solid background in software engineering with backend depth - (C#/.NET or equivalent), TypeScript, and AWS or Azure
- 3+ years managing engineering teams
- A track record as a strong individual contributor or tech lead before moving into management
- Experience designing APIs and platforms that other teams build on top of
- A background shipping customer-facing product, not just internal infrastructure
- Genuine, active use of AI tooling in your day-to-day workflow (this is a forward-leaning, AI-first engineering culture)

What makes it different
You won't be managing from a distance. You'll be trusted to get into the technical weeds, influence architecture decisions, and lead a team solving problems for one of the most demanding, highest-scrutiny data products in sport where the people using your platform are analysing matches at the elite end of the game.
