Engineering Manager - Data Centre

We have an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Manager to join Suir Engineering Ltd, based in Glasgow. The Engineering Manager for the Data Centre sector will oversee the design, development, and delivery of the MEP engineering scope on a 19MW hyperscale data centre built for AI and high-performance computing. The project is designed and installed to Tier III concurrently maintainable standards.

This role requires a strong technical background in HV and LV power distribution, standby generation, UPS and critical cooling systems, together with project management expertise and the ability to lead a diverse team of electrical and mechanical engineers. The ideal candidate will drive design coordination and innovation, including off-site manufacture and modular delivery. They will ensure regulatory and specification compliance, manage the Contractor Design Portion through to approval, and lead the engineering team through testing and commissioning to Integrated Systems Testing and Ready for Service. They will also contribute to the company's strategic goals in the mission-critical data centre sector.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Oversee the planning, design, and delivery of MEP engineering for mission-critical data centre projects, from pre-construction through to Ready for Service
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget, with key focus on critical milestones such as HV power-on, LV energisation and commissioning windows
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including commercial, construction, commissioning, quality and safety, to ensure project success
  • Provide technical leadership in the design and optimisation of HV/LV power distribution, standby generation, UPS, critical cooling and controls systems to Tier III concurrently maintainable standards
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in the Data Centre Sector, including high-density AI/HPC workloads and liquid cooling
  • Manage the Contractor Design Portion, including design submittals, calculations and consultant approvals, ensuring full specification and regulatory compliance
  • Oversee factory acceptance testing and the delivery of testing and commissioning through Levels 1–5 to Integrated Systems Testing
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of electrical and mechanical engineers
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment focused on continuous improvement, quality and right-first-time delivery
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide coaching, and support the professional development of team members
  • Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding engineering on data centre projects
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, presentations, and progress updates to senior management, clients and principal contractors
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including end clients, principal contractors, design consultants, equipment suppliers, utility companies and building control
  • Develop and manage the engineering budget, including forecasting, procurement of long-lead equipment and allocation of resources
  • Optimise resource utilisation to ensure cost-effective project delivery and operational efficiency

Is this job for me?

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related field. A master's degree or higher is preferred.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the IET, CIBSE or equivalent professional body is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in engineering, with at least 3 years in the data centre or mission-critical sector
  • Proven experience in managing large-scale data centre MEP projects, including design, construction, and commissioning through to Integrated Systems Testing.
  • Strong understanding of HV/LV power distribution, standby generation, UPS, critical cooling and Tier III concurrently maintainable design.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards, including BS 7671, CDM 2015, the Electricity at Work Regulations and Building Standards (Scotland)
  • Experience with electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS), building management systems (BMS) and utility grid connections.
  • Knowledge of the data centre market, including hyperscale, colocation and AI/HPC client requirements.
  • Experience with generator control systems, SCADA and other critical control technologies.
