Engineering Manager – Mobile - Manchester – Hybrid - 6-month contract (2x a week onsite) - £736 p/d (Inside IR35)

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join a globally recognised e-commerce client, leading a multidisciplinary team working on a key customer-facing search and conversational experience. You’ll lead Android, iOS, backend and full-stack engineers, partnering with Product, Design, UX and Data teams across international locations. The role combines people leadership, delivery management and strong Android technical leadership.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Own delivery planning, roadmap progress, resourcing, dependencies and risks.
  • Provide technical direction across Android, iOS, backend and full-stack development.
  • Provide Android guidance across Kotlin, Jetpack, Compose/Views and architecture.
  • Support technical decisions, code reviews, debugging and production issues.
  • Drive quality, testing, accessibility, security, performance and reliability.
  • Own services from discovery through production and continuous improvement.
  • Support recruitment, headcount planning and team ways of working.
  • Build an inclusive, high-performing culture focused on autonomy and development.

Key requirements

  • 5+ years’ software engineering experience, including significant Android experience.
  • Previous experience managing, leading or coaching engineering teams.
  • Strong Kotlin and Android expertise.
  • Experience with modern Android architecture, Jetpack, Compose/Views, modularisation and asynchronous programming.
  • Strong understanding of mobile testing, CI/CD, releases and production debugging.
  • Experience making decisions around architecture, networking, caching and performance.
  • Ability to contribute to Android code and technical investigations when required.
  • Strong stakeholder communication and people-development skills.
  • Pragmatic approach to balancing customer impact, delivery, technical quality and operational risk.
