Role Overview
Reporting to the Signalling Response Manager, you'll lead the coordination and operational oversight of the First Line Response Team, ensuring engineering incidents are managed safely, efficiently and with minimal impact on customer service.
Working within a 24/7 operational environment, you'll direct response activities from the control room, support the maintenance and reliability of signalling, Automatic Train Control (ATC), station and Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) systems, and drive continuous improvement across engineering operations. You'll work closely with operational control teams, engineering managers and frontline technicians to ensure a consistent, professional and safety-focused response to railway incidents while supporting the ongoing development and competence of engineering colleagues.
What You'll Do
- Lead and coordinate the First Line Response Team to deliver a safe, effective and customer-focused engineering response across the DLR network.
- Direct engineering resources from the operational control environment to minimise service disruption and support service recovery.
- Support the maintenance, fault response and reliability of signalling, Automatic Train Control (ATC), station systems, points equipment and Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs).
- Escalate significant service-affecting failures to Engineering Management and provide clear recommendations for resolution.
- Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities to improve asset reliability, maintenance efficiency and response times.
- Maintain accurate engineering records and ensure incidents and maintenance activities are correctly documented.
- Assess competence and support the training and development of First Line Response Technicians.
- Build effective working relationships with control room teams and key operational stakeholders.
- Support testing, commissioning and engineering modification activities across the network.
- Deputise for the Signalling Response Manager when required.

What You'll Need
Essential
- Experience maintaining railway equipment, signalling systems, Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) or other railway infrastructure assets.
- Experience working within a safety-critical engineering environment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues to a range of stakeholders.
- Experience coordinating operational responses to engineering faults or service disruptions.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a 24/7 shift-based operational environment.
- A proactive approach to safety, continuous improvement and team development.

Desirable
- Experience leading or supervising engineering teams.
- Knowledge of Automatic Train Control (ATC) systems.
- Experience assessing engineering competence and delivering technical training.
- Previous experience working within a railway control room or operational response environment.
- Knowledge of railway maintenance and asset management systems.
