Java Software Engineer (Application Development Engineer)
International Tech Co, serving global investment banks
Birmingham, UK (Onsite)
Role Summary
International Tech Co is hiring a Java Software Engineer to join an onsite engineering team at a client's development centre in Birmingham. You will contribute as an individual contributor, building and improving transactional systems, delivering features at pace, and helping maintain reliability through strong incident ownership. Success in this role comes from technical credibility, clear communication, and a growth mindset with rapid learning.
What You’ll Do
- Build, enhance, and maintain Java applications with a focus on clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
- Deliver new features and improvements to transactional systems while maintaining strong engineering quality.
- Participate in incident response, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and reliability improvements.
- Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders, communicating progress, risks, and technical decisions clearly.
- Review code and contribute to continuous improvement of coding standards, testing practices, and architecture.
- Contribute to front-end web-stack development as needed to support end-to-end delivery.
- Work within Agile ways of working and contribute to planning, estimation, and iterative delivery.
Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum 2 years of application development engineering experience.
- Strong modern Java programming and software development experience.
- Passion for writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code and improving quality through code reviews.
- Experience building transactional systems and a strong understanding of software architecture concepts.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish technical credibility quickly.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Front-end web-stack development exposure.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)
- Experience building REST-based web services.
- Experience with microservices architecture.
- Experience with React and/or Angular.
- Experience with Spring, Hibernate, RabbitMQ, and/or Hazelcast.
- Experience with GitLab and Kubernetes.
- Basic PL/SQL knowledge to run queries and support data analysis.
- Experience working in a financial institution or regulated environment.
- Familiarity with Test Driven Development (TDD).
- Experience with asynchronous event-based processing.
- Agile methodology experience in delivery teams.
