Engineering Team Leader - Mobile Engineering Team

Role Overview

The Engineering Team Leader will oversee and coordinate the mobile engineering team, ensuring efficient delivery of engineering services across multiple client sites within the Midlands region. This role combines technical expertise with people management, requiring strong leadership skills to drive operational excellence and team performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Management

    • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mobile engineers, conducting regular performance reviews and identifying training needs.
    • Allocate work assignments effectively based on skills, location, and urgency.
    • Foster a collaborative team culture focused on safety, quality, and customer service excellence.
    • Develop Technical Supervisors for cover and support when appropriate through cross-training.
  • Operational Delivery

    • Ensure planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules are completed on time and to specification.
    • Coordinate reactive maintenance callouts and emergency responses.
    • Monitor job completion rates, first-time-fix rates, and overall service delivery metrics.
    • Maintain effective communication with clients regarding service delivery and engineering issues.
    • Lead twice-daily performance management calls with CEC.
  • Work Order Management & Planning

    • Review technician diaries daily, batching work orders to achieve full efficiency and minimize returns.
    • Combine backlog review, monthly PPMs, and current in-SLA reactive tasks to optimize scheduling.
    • Assist CEC with correct technician allocation based on skill, location, and ability to meet SLA/KPI.
  • Technical Oversight

    • Review and approve engineering work specifications and method statements.
    • Provide technical guidance on complex repairs and installations, offering reactive support for technicians on complex jobs.
    • Ensure all work complies with relevant health and safety legislation, building regulations, and manufacturer specifications.
    • Create RAMS documents using Hands HQ as required.
    • Manage logistics of approved quoted works, including ensuring RAMS are in place, parts are ordered, access is arranged, and technicians have correct tools and qualifications.

  • Health & Safety

    • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture within the team.
    • Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe systems of work are implemented.
    • Complete at least two audits on technicians monthly.
    • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
    • Ensure all team members hold valid certifications and training for their respective disciplines.
    • Manage access equipment specifications for CEC ordering.
  • Out of Hours (OOH) Management

    • Manage OOH rotas including arranging cover for sickness, managing starters and leavers.
    • Support on-call for escalations.
  • Certification & Documentation Management

    • Ensure all technicians understand the electronic forms process.
    • Chase and provide missing certification from technicians, ensuring the area of responsibility has no missing certificates.
  • New Starter Management

    • Manage day 1 inductions for new technicians.
    • Manage tablet training and carry out best practice training to ensure new starters are fully equipped and integrated into the team.
  • Stand-In Duties

    • Provide cover for Engineering Manager during sickness and annual leave, ensuring continuity of leadership and operational oversight.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Strong IT literacy skills
  • Proven experience leading or supervising engineering teams
  • Strong technical knowledge across building services disciplines
  • Experience with CAFM systems (Corrigo) and mobile workforce management tools
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Experience in facilities management or building services maintenance environment
  • Proficiency with performance management systems

Desirable:

  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent H&S qualification
  • Experience with the creation of RAMS
  • CDM (Construction Design and Management) knowledge

  • Excellent organizational and planning capabilities with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills at all levels including the ability to lead performance calls and liaise with multiple stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Customer-focused approach with commercial awareness.
  • Strong analytical skills for performance monitoring and data quality assessment.
  • Ability to work autonomously while supporting wider team objectives.
  • Proactive approach to quality assurance and continuous improvement.
