Role Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Engineering Technician to join our Product team and support the assembly, testing and production of our acoustic automation systems.
Initially, you will focus on assembling existing products, constructing test rigs and helping turn prototype systems into repeatable, well-documented products. You will also support the wider engineering team with practical workshop activities, testing, troubleshooting and procurement.
Reporting to the Prototyping Engineer, you will work closely with engineers across mechanical, electrical and product development disciplines. The role combines precise assembly work with practical experimentation, system testing and process improvement.
This is a junior position with the opportunity to develop increasing responsibility as your experience grows. It would suit someone who enjoys building real systems, solving practical engineering problems and helping emerging technology become reliable and repeatable.
What You’ll Work On
- Build mechanical, electrical and electromechanical sub-assemblies from engineering drawings, wiring diagrams and assembly instructions.
- Assemble complete prototype, pre-production and production systems with a consistent standard of accuracy and quality.
- Carry out functional checks, calibration, verification and validation procedures on assembled systems.
- Construct test rigs and prepare instrumentation for repeatable engineering experiments.
- Support engineers in running tests, recording results and identifying performance or reliability issues.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults in prototypes and early-stage products.
- Document build processes, test results, deviations and issues clearly and accurately.
- Create and update assembly instructions, test procedures and other practical engineering documentation.
- Help improve assembly methods, test processes and workshop organisation as products mature.
- Support the procurement, maintenance, and management of workshop parts, materials, tools and consumables.
- Collaborate with engineers across product development, electronics, mechanical design and research.
- Utilise and maintain production workflow systems and manufacturing processes to ensure the efficient and timely completion of assemblies.

Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Practical experience in an engineering, manufacturing, prototyping or product-development environment. This may have been gained through employment, an apprenticeship, vocational training, university projects or other substantial hands-on work.
- An HNC, HND, vocational qualification or equivalent practical experience in engineering, production engineering, mechatronics, electronics or a related field. Relevant graduates are also welcome to apply.
- Good mechanical or electromechanical assembly skills, including confidence using hand tools, fixtures and precision build equipment.
- Basic soldering skills and the ability to work safely with electrical and mechanical assemblies.
- Ability to read and follow engineering drawings, wiring diagrams and assembly documentation.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly when recording build and test information.
- Ability to investigate practical problems and complete defined tasks with an appropriate level of independence.
Nice to Have
- Experience working in a startup or similarly fast-moving engineering environment.
- Experience assembling scientific instruments, laboratory equipment or other complex technical systems.
- Knowledge of acoustic, optical or mechatronic systems.
- Exposure to verification and validation testing in a regulated or quality-driven environment.
- Familiarity with CAD viewing software or making simple updates using tools such as SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor.
- Experience using slicing software such as Bambu Studio.
- Experience designing parts for, setting up or operating FDM and resin 3D printers.
- Experience using laser cutters.
