Electro-Mechanical Technician
West London | Full-time, on-site
Some technicians want their next role to be a route into management or a desk-based engineering position. This role is for someone who wants to stay close to the equipment. Someone who enjoys building complex systems, finding faults, understanding why something isn’t working and getting it right. Someone who takes pride in becoming very good at what they do.
You’ll be working on automated equipment used to manufacture regenerative medicines, including stem-cell-derived therapies. The technology combines mechanical systems, electrical assemblies, robotics, drives, actuators, instrumentation and control. These are complex machines, we need technicians who enjoy that.
The company
You’ll join a biomedical technology company developing automated systems for the manufacture of regenerative medicines. The problem they are tackling is significant and the technology is showing potential across areas including Parkinson’s disease, blindness and spinal cord injury. Manufacturing these therapies at scale is difficult because many processes still rely heavily on manual production.
This company is automating that process and its technology has already been used to automate production of stem-cell-derived cells for R&D applications within major pharmaceutical companies. The next stage is building and operating automated cell-manufacturing facilities capable of producing regenerative medicines at much greater scale. That requires reliable equipment. And reliable equipment needs very good technicians.
What you’ll do
This is a hands-on electro-mechanical role. You’ll build, test, commission, diagnose and improve complex automated equipment.
Your work will include:
- Mechanical and electro-mechanical assembly
- Building enclosures, structures and robotic assemblies
- Installing small drives, actuators, PCBs and cable looms
- Reading engineering drawings and electrical schematics
- Testing components and completed assemblies
- Fault finding and diagnostics
- Identifying the root cause of problems rather than treating the symptom
- Rectifying faults in-house and occasionally at customer sites
- Working with suppliers when bought-in components don’t meet requirements
- Feeding practical improvements back into assembly methods and procedures

We are not specifically looking for a PCB or electronics specialist. We want someone who understands the complete electro-mechanical system and is comfortable getting hands-on with both mechanical and electrical assemblies.
Who we’re looking for
Your qualifications matter less than what you can do with your hands and how you think when something goes wrong. You may have an ONC, HNC, apprenticeship or equivalent technical background. More importantly, you’ll have spent several years building, testing or maintaining complex electro-mechanical equipment.
Your experience might come from:
- Medical equipment, robotics, automation, scientific instrumentation, aerospace, avionics, defence, nuclear, motorsport, automotive, test equipment or another environment where quality and reliability matter.
You should be comfortable:
- Working independently through technical problems
- Reading drawings and schematics
- Fault finding across mechanical and electrical systems
- Questioning why something has failed
- Suggesting better ways of assembling or testing equipment
- Explaining your reasoning clearly
- Working methodically when the answer isn’t immediately obvious
We don’t want someone who simply follows an assembly instruction and moves to the next job. Equally, this isn’t aimed at someone looking for a short stop before moving into design engineering or management. There is scope for training, its the attitude and mindset that’s most important.

The equipment you build has a clear purpose. You’ll work on automated systems designed to help medicine at a scale that manual production cannot support. You’ll also get variety. One day might involve building a robotic assembly. Another might involve diagnosing an intermittent fault, testing a component, working through a supplier issue or changing an assembly process because you’ve found a better way of doing it. You’ll be surrounded by scientists, engineers and manufacturing specialists, but your contribution is practical.

What you’ll need
- At least 2 years of hands-on electro-mechanical assembly, build, test or maintenance experience
- A practical engineering qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent experience
- Good mechanical and electrical understanding
- Ability to read engineering drawings and schematics
- Experience working with complex, low-volume equipment or automated systems
- A structured approach to fault finding and root-cause analysis
- Permanent right to work in the UK
- Ability to commute to West London or willingness to relocate
Medical equipment experience is not essential. The ability to build and diagnose complex equipment is.
