Job Description: Enterprise Technical Architect

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Enterprise Technical Architect to join HMRC’s Enterprise Cloud Services (ECS) team.

You will provide technical architectural leadership, technology lifecycle management planning and support to the Platform Owners. ECS delivers secure, scalable cloud platforms that underpin HMRC’s digital services. With a broad customer base and diverse requirements, ECS provides foundational infrastructure that enables teams to build and innovate.

We are redefining our offerings and growing the team of outstanding people to improve the Cloud Centre of Excellence. We are already a diverse team of 90+ technologists, creating a dynamic and inclusive working environment whose skills cover architecture, platform development, service design, platform operations and governance.

Security vetting level for this post is "SC" cleared, you will should already have this level of clearance

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with others in the team to provide architectural viewpoints; ensuring requirements are in alignment with the strategic roadmap.
  • Evaluating products/tools and providing enterprise appropriate recommendations.
  • Maintain governance arrangements and standards for technical information, escalating impacts, risks and issues appropriately.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies and industry trends.
  • Ensure compliance with security and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with other architects and technical leads to align on architectural standards and patterns.
  • Author detailed engineering functional solution documentation
  • Document architectural decisions, patterns, and best practices for wider adoption.
  • Able to balance short-term delivery with long-term technical vision.

Your Main Duties Will Include

  • Collaborate with engineers and product managers to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Lead technical discussions between internal teams and external stakeholders, clearly communicating concepts and driving continuous improvement.
  • Recommend and institute standard methodology, frameworks, design patterns, tools and reference architectures.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, and technical workshops
  • Lead the design and documentation of Platform infrastructure services and architecture roadmaps
  • Work within the team to build and mature operational capabilities to meet the delivery goals, and validate those goals are being met
  • Provide hands-on support and mentorship to engineering teams, helping to resolve complex technical challenges.

Essential Criteria

  • Background technical knowledge in Private Cloud data centre hosted, storage, and compute technology.
  • Articulating different architecture layers e.g. conceptual, logical, physical, and deployment architectures.
  • Effectively communicating both orally and in writing and successfully delivering messages to stakeholders.
  • Enterprise and software architecture, encompassing data, application and technology including security.
  • Able to troubleshoot and identify problems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

Desirable Criteria

Ideally You Will Also Have Experience And Understanding Of

  • Architectural development of Enterprise level data centre requirements and service delivery and architecture
  • Network concepts and application
  • Data centre management and systems, monitoring and tooling.
  • Working with teams in support and management of data centre and Cloud/Hybrid
  • Relevant technical qualifications for Cloud and data centre technology platforms and systems. IBM/Oracle/HPE/DELL.
  • Private & Native Cloud environments with a good understanding of Cloud principles
  • The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) Certified
  • Delivery Qualifications (e.g. Agile Project Management, Prince2)
