Environment & Sustainability Advisor
London | c. £85,000 + benefits | Permanent
A rapidly growing UK energy infrastructure business is looking to appoint an Environment & Sustainability Advisor to join its Group HSEQ function. This is a newly focused position with broad exposure across the organisation, supporting development, construction and operational assets across a diverse portfolio of energy infrastructure projects.
The role will provide specialist environmental and sustainability expertise across the business, helping to strengthen environmental compliance, develop the company's sustainability strategy and ensure environmental risks are identified and managed throughout the asset lifecycle. Reporting directly to the Group HSEQ Director, this is an opportunity for an experienced environmental professional to have genuine ownership and influence, rather than operating purely in an advisory capacity.
What you'll be doing
- Act as the company's specialist for environmental and sustainability matters, providing practical advice to development, construction and operations teams.
- Maintain and continually improve the Environmental Management System, including supporting ISO 14001 certification and ongoing assurance.
- Manage environmental legal and compliance registers and monitor compliance with permits, consents and planning conditions.
- Review and support Environmental Management Plans, Construction Environmental Management Plans, Waste Management Plans and pollution prevention measures.
- Provide environmental input throughout project development, design, construction and operational phases.
- Support environmental audits, compliance evaluations and incident investigations across projects, sites, contractors and suppliers.
- Develop sustainability and ESG metrics, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas reporting.
- Support sustainability reporting and ESG information requirements for the Board, investors and lenders.
- Coordinate environmental and sustainability improvement initiatives, including biodiversity commitments.
- Work directly with contractors and site teams to establish environmental standards and drive positive environmental performance.
- Support projects across the UK, with occasional involvement in European projects, including Germany and Spain.
- Deliver environmental awareness, training and engagement across the organisation.

The Background
We're looking for an experienced environmental or sustainability professional with a strong understanding of UK environmental legislation and permitting, ideally gained within energy, infrastructure or a similar project-led environment.
You'll ideally have:
- 7+ years' experience in an environmental or sustainability advisory role.
- At least 2 years' site-based experience working for an asset owner or leading contractor.
- Experience developing and maintaining an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
- Experience managing environmental permits, consents and planning conditions across multiple sites.
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation covering permitting, waste, discharge and abstraction, nuisance and contaminated land.
- Experience with environmental aspects and impacts assessments and environmental management plans.
- Knowledge of sustainability and ESG reporting, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
- Understanding of biodiversity, protected species and Biodiversity Net Gain.
- Experience working within the energy, power, utilities, renewables, BESS, flexible generation, hydro, hydrogen or wider infrastructure sectors.

Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainability or a related discipline.
- IEMA membership or working towards membership.
- ISO 14001 Internal or Lead Auditor qualification.
- CSCS Managers / Professionals card.
- Chartered Environmentalist status, NEBOSH Environmental Management or additional ISO / carbon accounting qualifications would be advantageous.
