Site HSE Manager – Structural Steel

The Opportunity

An immediate opportunity has arisen for an experienced Site HSE Manager to join a major structural steel project in North London.

This is a site-based, approximately three-month contract and is ideally suited to an experienced HSE professional who has a strong background working on structural steel projects and can take ownership of health, safety, and environmental performance on a busy construction site.

Steelwork experience is essential for this position.

Due to the immediate requirement, the successful candidate must be available to start next week.

The role will take responsibility for leading HSE activity on site, ensuring the project is delivered safely, in accordance with the HSE plan, relevant legislation, and the required project standards.

Working Pattern

The role operates on an 11-day fortnight:

Week 1

• Monday–Friday: 06:45–18:45
• Saturday–Sunday: 06:45–16:15

Week 2

• Monday–Wednesday: 06:45–18:45
• Thursday: 06:45–14:15

Weekends: Included as part of the standard 11-day fortnight.

Overtime: Not applicable – £50 per hour applies to all hours worked.

Key Responsibilities

As Site HSE Manager, you will take the lead on health and safety across the project, including:

• Compile and maintain the Construction Phase HSE Plan and supporting documentation.
• Lead the site team on all HSE matters and proactively manage safety preparation and execution.
• Ensure strict compliance with the project HSE plan and relevant requirements.
• Develop and deliver HSE targets, plans, audits, and improvement initiatives.
• Attend HSE committee meetings and contribute to project safety strategy.
• Ensure project HSE targets and plans are effectively implemented.
• Ensure lessons learned from previous projects are incorporated into current working practices.
• Ensure appropriate risk assessments are completed before work begins.
• Prepare, organise, and support site safety briefings.
• Develop and coordinate safety initiatives, campaigns, themes, and site communications.
• Establish arrangements for injury and incident investigations.
• Provide professional guidance and advice on all project safety matters.
• Audit subcontractor HSE documentation, competence, and training compliance.
• Monitor and improve subcontractor safety performance.
• Report incidents and injuries promptly to the Project Manager.
• Lead investigations and produce appropriate status reports.
• Support the implementation and testing of emergency procedures.
• Prepare and manage site inductions.
• Ensure all operatives receive the required inductions and training.
• Participate in site emergency exercises.
• Prepare and coordinate weekly toolbox talks.
• Produce regular HSE reports, statistics, and recommendations for improvement.
• Support the ordering and issue of PPE.
• Ensure all works are appropriately risk assessed and audit the quality of risk assessments.
• Organise personal monitoring where required.
• Ensure all project HSE obligations and arrangements are fulfilled.
• Promote a positive, proactive safety culture throughout the workforce.
