Environmental Claims Manager, Auto and General Liability

This role can be based out of one of the following AXA XL Office Locations: Exton, PA | Hartford, CT | Atlanta, GA | Dallas, TX | Chicago, IL

As Claims Manager, Environmental P&C, you will play a critical role in leading a team responsible for complex environmental, auto/transportation, and general liability claims. You will serve as a subject matter expert and collaborate with Claims colleagues, Underwriting, Actuarial, Legal, and external partners to deliver specialized claims service and effective business outcomes. This position reports to the Head of Primary Casualty Claims, Americas and will partner closely with leadership to advance claim-handling strategy, operational effectiveness, and best practices. You will manage and develop a team of claims professionals, ensuring disciplined technical claim handling, exceptional customer service, effective business segment support, and a performance culture focused on accountability and continuous improvement.

What you’ll be doing

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Lead and manage a team of Environmental P&C claims professionals responsible for complex and high-exposure environmental, auto/transportation, and general liability claims, including bodily injury, property damage, commercial auto, litigation, and related exposures.
  • Oversee coverage analysis, investigation, liability and exposure evaluation, reserving, litigation strategy, negotiation, and resolution in accordance with AXA XL’s Global Claims Handling Principles, service standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight on complex coverage matters and coverage litigation, partnering with Claims Legal and internal and external counsel to achieve effective and cost-efficient outcomes.
  • Manage claim audits and ensure Financial Internal Controls compliance across the team, reinforcing consistent execution, file quality, and adherence to established claim-handling standards.
  • Use claims data and analytics to identify and communicate emerging loss, liability, coverage, and litigation trends to Underwriting, Actuarial, and Claims leadership, supporting informed portfolio and business decisions.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting on claim issues, trends, lessons learned, policy and endorsement language, account reviews, renewals, and marketing and business development activities.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to policyholders and brokers and ensure consistent application of high service standards across the team.
  • Establish effective litigation and resolution strategies with claims professionals and counsel, balancing technical quality, timely resolution, expense management, and optimal outcomes for AXA XL and its insureds.
  • Identify strategic and tactical opportunities that can be addressed through technology, process improvement, data, or training; maintain disciplined oversight of vendors and claim expenses.
  • Set clear expectations for each team member, manage performance, coach and develop talent, maintain engagement, and contribute to succession planning and the team’s long-term capabilities.
  • Partner with Claims leadership and peer managers to support broader Primary Casualty Claims priorities, promote consistency, and share best practices across teams.

You will report to the Head of Primary Casualty Claims, Americas.

What you will BRING

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

  • Technical expertise: Demonstrated background in Property & Casualty claims, including experience handling and/or supervising complex environmental, auto/transportation, and general liability claims. Proven ability to develop claim strategies and negotiate and resolve complex, time-sensitive matters.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading claims professionals, developing talent, managing performance, maintaining engagement, and building an accountable, high-performing team.
  • Analytical judgment: Demonstrated analytical and critical-thinking skills, sound judgment, and the ability to evaluate complex coverage, liability, damages, litigation, and reserve matters. Initiative and the ability to work without supervision and drive results.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication, collaboration, presentation, negotiation, and influencing skills. Ability to communicate complex matters clearly to internal and external stakeholders at all levels and to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Claims and regulatory knowledge: Knowledge of insurance coverage principles, multi-state claim regulations, litigation management, and applicable claim-handling requirements.
  • Business partnership: Ability to translate claim trends and technical insights into practical recommendations for Underwriting, Actuarial, Legal, and Claims leadership.
  • Client service: Commitment to customer service, with professionalism and diplomacy in interactions with policyholders, brokers, and other external stakeholders.
  • Professional integrity: Impeccable reputation for ethics, integrity, accountability, and the highest standards of professionalism.
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree required
  • Licenses and designations: Applicable state adjuster licenses required. Relevant insurance designations, such as CPCU, AIC, or ARM, preferred.

The U.S. base salary range for this position is USD 139,300-219,300.

Actual pay will be determined based upon the individual’s skills, experience and location. We strive for market alignment and internal equity with our colleagues’ pay.
