Passionate about green initiatives, zero emissions, and making a real environmental impact? National Express Bus is looking for an Environmental Compliance & Sustainability Manager to lead our sustainability and environmental compliance agenda.
As we transition toward a Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) fleet, you will be our trusted advisor on environmental regulations, waste management, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction. You will oversee our Environmental Management System across all operational depots and lead us toward ISO 14001 certification.
This role is based at NX House (Birmingham) with a hybrid working setup.
What you will actually be doing
- Lead ISO 14001 & EMS: Build, maintain, and embed our Environmental Management System across operational depots, engineering facilities, and offices.
- Drive Zero Emission Goals: Support our decarbonisation strategy, fleet transition to zero emission vehicles, and the roll out of green infrastructure.
- Ensure Compliance: Keep us fully compliant with UK environmental legislation, licences, and permits, while liaising with environmental regulators and local authorities.
- Conduct Audits & Investigations: Lead site inspections, track environmental performance, investigate pollution incidents or near misses, and deliver root cause analyses.
- Track ESG Metrics: Monitor and report greenhouse gas emissions, fuel use, waste, and energy consumption to senior leadership and external audit bodies.
- Build Awareness: Run sustainability campaigns, create environmental training materials, and support managers in hitting their site environmental targets.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
